I had my friendly geek put the fastest possible controller in here, still compatible with WinXP -- and as much memory as he could stuff in the tower; I think I have 32 gig and that made a HUGE difference in the speed at which things load, particularly the heavily graphic stuff on Facebook games

fortunately the computer was built up, originally, by the computer dept at MCC, so all components are "standard" rather than brand-specific, making it far easier and cheaper to update .. but I think I've now hit the possible ceiling for this operating system -- and for several good reasons I will NOT change that on the tower (though our laptop runs Win 7)

adding memory to laptops is a bit different, since almost all of those require brand-specific memory modules

If you have A 32-bit processor, it can only address 2^32 (2 to the 32nd power, or 4,294,967,295) addresses in memory, so that places a 4GB limit of RAM. Other hardware devices claim some of that memory for their use, which takes away what is available to the OS (which also claims some RAM) and applications. Typically this leaves you with about 3.2GB of RAM left for applications.

So, if your guy has put in more than that you have really overspent! (Unless you have a 64 bit processor, and that's another story!)

OKay..... Just went through and TRIED to catch up with the last three days, that's all the patience I had!!

So I am just going to write to everyone and bring it up to speed.

to Zoichick and Gscott!! good bunch of peeps here, glad your here!
And just a note about the BofA and Wells fargo issue, I shared this when they changed the forum over so not sure anyone saw it. I quit BofA over 20 yrs ago cause of crap they started, had Wells fargo, quit them cause of crap they started. I have had Banner bank over 10 yrs, no fees!! And we belong to USAA now that is a military org, but we have had OUTSTANDING service, you can be the spouse, or child of a veteran to join, but, it is well worth looking into, we have saved a tremendous amount of money on insurance, banking etc.
Cloverleaf... love the horse stories, if I started with mine we would be here all night, like what you said!! I wouldn't have a mean horse on my property either, free or not!! Nice gelding!
I hope everyone is thawing out and getting power back etc... we have had extremely high winds, we are now at a balmy 46 degrees. Still have lots of snow on the ground but at this rate it won't be around long.

Ok, so here's what's going on in my neck of the woods. I will be leaving for Sheridan WY in a few days, going to see my kids.
and guess what? The Seattle VA called me to get my appointment for the Muscular/skeletal (sp) doc. Check out what the gal had to say.
I told her my PA had done all he could do, I've been to PT he told me there was nothing more he could do, recommended MRI
and go back to my doc. And that the Radiologist, saw nothing on the hip rad, and guess what?....recommended MRI !! AND....had a EMG done came back normal and the Neurologist recommended.......wait for it.....an MRI!!!! so I told her that my PA had said that Walla Walla (who is responsible for making these big decisions) said that I couldn't have one because of the "budget".... she says to me, that's crap!!
"we do them all the time"!!!!

So she set up lodging for my husband and I we will be going up the 9th of Feb and the apt is on the morning of the 10th. She told me that the doc I'm seeing is really cool, and does a thorough job and he will probably order the MRI the same day and we would probably have to wait around, but could have it done in the afternoon!!! Check that out!!!! You just need to talk to the right peeps!! I spoke to a patient advocate yesterday from Walla Walla,( who was supposed to call me back and never did!! ) Who said, well, there had to be a reason why they wouldn't do it, and basically blah blah blah...... REALLY??? I have been in the VA system since 02 I have had the hip issue since 05!!! Now, it wasn't any where near as bad as it is now, but, I have a rating disability on my back, and I don't know, but, I walk on two legs, after 28 yrs of a back injury do you think it might affect my hip???? As a Vet tech I took A&P guess what peeps, we may not have a tail, or feathers etc...but, we do have the same bone structure in our legs and hips....it's no different. We can't use three legs to support a bad leg.... anyway, lets hope we can get to the bottom of it, I'm tired of being in constant pain, and I won't take injections or pain meds, that would just mask the symptoms and not address the problem! I believe that my PA did all he could do, he is a good guy and he truly wanted to help. I think he may have known, if he sent me up there, the docs up there would just do the MRI and he wouldn't have to ask WW again. That's what I think. It's just like the military, hurry up and wait, and wait...and exhaust all resources till you find the right person to get the answers!! That's been my experience anyway!!! WELCOME TO GOV HEALTH CARE!!!

Ok I'm done!!

I'm glad you finally found that person. I wouldn't wish constant pain on my worst enemy.

fortunately the computer was built up, originally, by the computer dept at MCC, so all components are "standard" rather than brand-specific, making it far easier and cheaper to update .. but I think I've now hit the possible ceiling for this operating system -- and for several good reasons I will NOT change that on the tower (though our laptop runs Win 7)

adding memory to laptops is a bit different, since almost all of those require brand-specific memory modules

I think I paid all of $20 for the additional memory .. Dangerous Dan's hourly charge was the "big" ticket item, and it would have been the same regardless of how much memory he put in, as he was also evaluating/updating all the software drivers, and verifying that there were no residual Trojans or keyloggers or backdoors in the mix .... so I basically got a brand-new CLEAN computer for under $100 ... and I think he put in a dual-boot system so it's possible I have a 64 bit processor also though I don't think XP supports such

Welcome to the WA thread =) one of the reasons it goes so fast is we all talk to ourselves a lot. Must be the lack of vitamin D?

hanks for posting this... was going to reply about this but i'm working so reading first...

I just want to let everyone know that I am still alive and safe. Outside of the damaged landscaping trees, I wasn't effected very much by the storms.

So glad you're okay! I couldn't find your phone number anywhere, and was seriously considering a drive-by if you didn't pop up soon.
