ok... i am still not getting email updates to new posts.... grrr.... maybe its something in my main settings and not this thread setting... cause i have it set to notify immediately...
later this week i plan to run an experiment on myself.
I am going to go to a friends house. scratch my arms and put fresh avocado on my arm and eat a slice.
last week for no reason, hours after making guacamole i broke out in hives for 10 minutes. freaked me out. that was the only symptom. no itchy mouth, and i don't remember having any digestion issues.
then last night my sister posted on facebook that she is allergic, cause she made an avocado mask and her face broke out (course i think the purpose of face mask's is to draw out the gunk, which causes it to break out) but she said her face was red and itchy and she was itchy everywhere....
in the past year or so i have started to like guacamole.... and people tell me to eat better so i decided to make guacamole here as a healthy snack (which it didn't turn out well tasting, need my mexican friend to make it, theirs is addicting)
So i am curious about how this experiment will turn out. i will have benedryl on hand just in case....
but has anyone every heard of being allergic to fresh avocados, but not guacamole?
I have never been allergic to food... I am not allergic to latex, I work in a lab and am surrounded and use the gloves (i think the gloves are latex, i will have to test that too)
I'm allergic to avocado, but I am also allergic to latex. My reaction to avocado is often worse than my latex allergy. I'm also allergic to mango, papaya, fig...
When I spent all those months on bed rest, my Dr. was in the room once when the dietitian came in to get find out if I had any food allergies. I told her I was just a little bit allergic - latex gloves usually only bother me i I have a scrape on my hand - My skin puffs up and burns. Foods make my tongue swell a little and the roof of my mouth hurt.
My Dr. cut in and said no one is ever "a little bit allergic". All that it means is you have not had a bad reaction yet. It could happen at any time. About 20 years ago he had an RN as a patient and she also stated that she was just a little bit allergic to latex - only minor irritation. They used a latex catheter and she went into anaphalactic shock and died on the operating table.
That is a risky way to find out if you are allergic to something.
That said, I notice I have much less of a reaction to latex now than I would get when I was around it daily. I started sneaking in the occasional slice of avocado just because I love it. I'm being incredibly stupid, but sometimes avocados call to me more than chocolate did in the past. I pretty much lost my chocolate craving when I was pregnant with Alex, and it never came back.
