-very deep breath-

This has been a very, very bad winter for chickens.... and very depressing.
I am heart broken Lionel is my oldest chicken. he is just over 4 years old. pidgin is a year younger, but i know she is tough with how she broods alone.

:hit

I feel so badly for you Rachel. there's nothing worse than the suffering of our animals. Sending my heartfelt sympathy and good thoughts for Lionel to pull through. Good Luck and don't feel alone. May your heart heal from this senseless accident.

I was going to post yesterday the ONE GOOD NEWS..... but was busy making a 4 hour drive and having dinner with the family.... and then today overshadowed.

Thursday evening I emailed my cover letter and resume to a job I want. Yesterday morning I got a call back and have a JOB INTERVIEW MONDAY AT 10AM!!!

I'm excited because my friends have been applying for jobs like crazy and havent gotten any calls.... and me on my First Try at a job and I get a call and interview. I am 50% there to having a job.
The company is NCSI Americas. They are a large 3rd party food safety company. It is entry level but has room to grow into auditing. Because this is a new industry I feel i can learn fast and possibly climb high. There are no classes in college that are specifically for this new industry yet. So someone with a B.S. in pomology is the requirement. (which i will have soon....)

I'm so sorry for your losses

My experience with human burns is that infection is the worst and you are supposed to keep the wounds cleaned - and soak and scrub the scab from the wounds at least once per day. Not sure if that is the same for chickens?

Good luck finding homes for the Cayuga.

-very deep breath-
good thing i didn't ask the past week or so about my chickens. i got to see this morning how they were....
I guess last sunday one of my coops caught fire and burned down.

there were few survivors. Lionel and Pidgin. my favorites are alive... but i will get to them in a second.

Dad counted 9 dead. there was one that went and hid in the back of one nest box and i found it dead... the straw in the nest under it was scorched (and this was in my other coop that it went to)
There is one other survivor that i am going to have dad and john take care of tonight.... it can't walk. It walks on its 'hocks' i picked it up and that smell is burned in my nose... its feet are curled up and black. this was an EE but the legs are dead, bone, melted. so i set it near food and water for some peace.

Lionel has swollen feet and melted toe nails.... his spurs are black.... the few times he walks he picks his legs up sooo high. Him and Pidgin had feathered feet. I think it both saved them but made it worse. I don't know what to do for them. Pidgin has skin peeling off her feet. the skin on both is still... alive looking with some scales gone..... Pidgin seems to be doing 'best' It sounds like dad has been putting neosporin on them all week. Also they don't have tails..... their tails burned off..... all the feathers around their butt are burned off..... and the rest of the feathers are smoke and heat damaged.
This is beyond my understanding of what to do.
Lionel was standing on the snow... which i am sure hurt but keeps the swelling down....
I have placed Lionel and Pidgin in my little chicken tractor with water and scratch and clean straw. If there is medications i can get them today please let me know and i am also posting in the emergencys thread. I know that anything with 'cane' in it can kill them... and i am glad and lucky my dad only was putting neosporin on....
I also have a Cayuga Drake that i put in with them... the other ducks have picked on it bad. he has no feathers on his neck and after picking him up i realized they been keeping him from food and water. I need to find a new home for him, and probably for a few more drakes because i am sure they are figuring out who gets the 2 females...

Even though a week as about passed since they been burned it still looks iffy for Lionel. he is still in shock to me.

Oh geeze so many choices... I have no idea.

I guess it doesnt help that I dont have the slightest idea on how to incubate eggs... LOL SO many options. I guess I need to do more research.
Weeellllll,

Then I would go with the GQF Genesis with the electrostatic Thermostat and order the 12 volt emergency connector (like $12) and just follow directions. I still put a thermometer in just to check but even in my variable temp kitchen I have not had the ups and downs like I get with the wafer. I do like to finish hatching and sometimes do first day brood in the LG's while the rest of the Hatch in finishing. Find a 12v deep cycle marine or car battery, keep it charged and accessible and you are good for power outages. Saved some of our butt (eggs) during our last bad storm and no power, computer or phone for days -- had to unplug turner and triple stack eggs, also blanketed incubator.

On a normal setting it is truly an uneventful incubator to start with. You might get 'bored' waiting to make an adjustment! I suppose if I where setting $50/100 each eggs I would use a superior rated cabinet type model and pray, anoint, and chant daily over the incubator. That's just me, I guess =:~)

best wishes,

k/

for "car" battery I mean electric/hybrid car -- ours are used from a friend's e-car. Not enough to power his car's commute but great for doing an incubator for daysssssss even on a partial charge as the power went out before we could get it charged up =:~)

I have that exact same one and I love it. The thermostats are so much easier to adjust on the Hovabator styro than the Little Giant (miller)so you wouldn't really need the 1588 and the big window is really nice. The egg turner holds 42 eggs so for the price it's a great deal.
OK guys so I have been looking into incubators. I think I found one. Let me know what you think. I am gonna add the auto turner. But I really like this one because it has a big window. ( great for my kids)

Quote: What is it that makes the Hova easier than the LG. From what I see they are both wafers. I am just curious what the difference would be.

I have thought about that.... but I think if i do that their "skin" will peel off and i really do not want to see what that looks like. the skin on the bottom of Pidgin is peeling off. and the scales on both birds are melted.... I think the only reason their feet are 'ok' is the quils from the foot feathering keep everything on..... and the feather growth 'promotes' blood circulation in the legs.... i would like to think the feathering of the feet also made walking on the burning straw more 'bearable'.

. . . As I said before, EVERYONE has a religion and a god. Even the Atheists because they get to be their own god. And Evolution would therefore come under the heading of "religion" too.
From Wikipedia
God is the English name given to a singular being in theistic and deistic religions (and other belief systems) who is either the sole deity in monotheism, or a single deity in polytheism.[1]
God is most often conceived of as the supernatural creator and overseer of the universe. Theologians have ascribed a variety of attributes to the many different conceptions of God. The most common among these include omniscience (infinite knowledge), omnipotence (unlimited power), omnipresence (present everywhere), omnibenevolence (perfect goodness), divine simplicity, and eternal and necessary existence.
God has also been conceived as being incorporeal (immaterial), a personal being, the source of all moral obligation, and the "greatest conceivable existent".[1] These attributes were all supported to varying degrees by the early Jewish, Christian and Muslim theologian philosophers, including Maimonides,[2] Augustine of Hippo,[2] and Al-Ghazali,[3] respectively. Many notable medieval philosophers and modern philosophers have developed arguments for [3] the existence of God and in modernity against.

Contrast with Atheist from Wikipedia
Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.[1] In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities.[2][3] Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist.[3][4] Atheism is contrasted with theism,[5][6] which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.[6][7]

Mine:- Therefore, an Atheist isn't a God (even to himself, or myself in this case), nor is Atheism a Religion.

I enjoy debates such as these, especially when they are conducted in an adult fashion; they remain civil, and people respect each others views. However, due to Moderator intervention/interception, it might be better to have these discussions in another thread, created specifically for this purpose.

Part of the problem with a discussion like this, is semantics. Since we often can't even agree on a definition, how then to have a reasonable discussion?
