Chickielady Have you tried Riffe lake? you can get very nice landlocked silvers. Just make sure to watch the weather and if the wind starts to pick up GET OFF THE LAKE !!!! Trust me it can get very bad in a small boat.

And finally a BIG HOWDY shout out to all the people on here that I know but may not have heard from for a while.

I guess never mind is the appropriate thing to say under the circumstances...........

I just want everyone to know that I may be blonde....but I it is all bleached to cover grey....and the bleach has soacked into my brain and that is what is effecting me. This is my story and I am sticking to it.

I think your explanation is perfectly reasonable. I too have spent a decade or some pretending that I am a red head. It's great to hide behind the color, but more than not the blonde show thru and I have to confess that I am really a card carrying blond in disguise. I also have a license to be a backseat driver.
I agree that Yorkies are not a very good match with chickens.

I do miss Cindy (akaweaveagarden) I hope that she can feel warm fuzzys from the group here. I think this is a very nice group of chicken lovers right now on this thread. I know that the group has changed a lot since we all met together in February, but everyone here is special to the group as a whole. We all add little bit of ourselves and our knowledge to the group.
I am very happy that weavea's flock is still together. I know that she really wanted to have that happen.

I do have question though, does Cindy still have any chickens? I would think that 8 hens are better than no chickens at all. Also I think that a small flock like that would be easier to care for especially when one doesn't have the best of health. I too have days where it is very hard to care for all the critters that make up my everyday family.

I know that being on the forum that it can be very difficult to read about everyone getting new birds, hatching and finding other cool things can be hard when you can't have anymore. It is very disappointing to not have any space, or to not be allowed to have more really cool different breeds of chickens when everyone else seems to getting more. But having this community is very precious, especially when one is limited to how much we can do or have. I wish that I could have a rooster and yet it is not reasonable for me to keep one while living in a sub-division. I also wish that I didn't live in a cookie cutter neighborhood of suburbia, but this where I am and it's what I have to live with.

I do though rejoice when I hear of others getting really cool chickens and their ability to add to their flocks, and I am also grieved when one of us losses one of our pets. I truly find though that even on days that I have nothing to add that I feel that we are all here for one another and I am comforted. Sometimes a hug is the best thing and everyone here is great at giving hugs

well, a little bit outside it, but yep. by Mayfield. Hope you had fun up here. It's pretty around here. I'm not much of a fisherman so can't really offer too much advice in that area... but there are a lot of places to fish around here

My husband will kill me, but if you cant find a closer home for your little one, I have week old ducklings here, and could either take yours in, or if you would like, I could give you a couple of mine to keep him/her company. Let me know what you think, and if I can help out at all.

Thank you for the kind offer. Yesterday I tried to better rat proof the pen. Momma duck, at first, was really ignoring the orphan duckling so I put him in an inside pen with a heat lamp. On hind site I think she was just desperately trying to get the 'lost' duckling to come back, but she was so thrilled after I decided the lone duckling would probably be okay back with her at the end of the day yesterday. The first try (above) hadn't worked very well and most of yesterday he was a lonely confused duckling. But now the two of them seem to be good for each other and in a few weeks he might be close enough to my Runner ducklings size that I can put all three of them together. As my husband keeps saying - there seems to be no end to the 'duck drama' here.

What kind of collie ? Full big collie ?
That is alot of hair that has to be brushed...I am old, and need a dog that is kick-butt, loves to protect, and requires little or no 'buetification' such as coiffing, you get my drift ?
I am thinking terrier.
I am thinking a shorthaired, like a rat terrier...
My brother has Scotties, but they require so much clipping, but gorgeous dogs !
Please you guys, help me.
Remember, We are on the verge of crippled, and old::like 60, so an active dog like a lab or bdr collie will be too much...

see?
we are old !!!!

Yep, full, big, (AND big coated) collie. I've had them for years and always find them gentle and trustworthy with small children and small pets (though my current one is more exhuberant(sp?) than all the others combined). Their rough outer coating seems to make matting less of a problem than one might imagine. I'm about the same age as you and hubby, and I confess I'm looking at a smaller dog next time around, though I can't imagine finding any breed as predictably good with the animals here. I'm afraid our experience with the various terriers belonging to friends and family have literally been lethal (though I would love something to help combat the rats). Our next go around I'm looking for a long haired doxie, though our neighbors' two daschunds managed to do in a chick or two. We share the chickens and it was the newly adopted babies, in their house, under a heat lamp. Those two little buggers managed to get up on the table, knock the brooder on the floor, and damage a couple before anyone knew what was happening. I agree with you about the Scotties - I love them, but my mother's did in one of our pullets that had managed to fly out of the protected run and whenever he's here he's desperate to get at any of our critters that our half his size. I think it might have been different if he had been raised here, but being the sole pet of a senior who lives in the city, he's definitely not got any social skills.

Speaking of dogs that do well with chickens, I drive by this place all the time, that has 2 beagles penned in with their flock of chickens and two young cows. I smile everytime I drive by. I see them all lounging together and it just makes me melt. I never in a million years thought that a beagle would make a good flock guardian, but I guess there are exceptions to every rule.

We have a Puggle, (half beagle/half pug) and love him to pieces, but would NEVER trust him near the birds. But he is a cutie and the perfect size. Our other two dogs are a Lab and a Retreiver. My husband grew up with the big dogs, and he has been won over by my little Puggle. I got him after all the girls were in school full time to keep me company, so he is the house dog. The big dogs are outside during the day, in their own run, far from the birds. The puggles size is just perfect, and DH said our next dogs down the road will be that size. I think he truly wants one of his own!!!! But can't do four dogs!

WA4-H What are the breeds of your 2 bigger dogs?
I know that fellow BYC member Tailfeathers as a beagle that lives with his flock. I felt bad that the little guy had to live with the chickens, because it was clear that the little dog just wanted to be with Royce it the house. But if there were 2 beagles they would have each other and the chickens to love they would be happier dogs.
I would check with the Beagle Club of America and see if they have any rescues available or know of any. A lot of the Breeders clubs have a rescue resource. I would go to AKC.org and check the different clubs out. I know a lot of people don't want pure breeds, but even getting a dog with a least half of it genetic make up from a specific breed, makes it much more predictable at what the dogs temperament will be like as a adult.

I ha worked with the Old English Sheepdog rescue and it was a very rewarding feeling to know that we helped save some abused dogs. I know for the short time they were with us that they had a chance at a normal life finally.

I wish that my chow-chow mixed dog was still with us she was great with the chicken and other farm animals, and she was the best mouser that I have ever seen.

WA4-H What are the breeds of your 2 bigger dogs?

The bigger dogs are a yellow lab and a golden retreiver. But it's funny, the lab is very reddish tan, and so is the retriever. All three dogs are almost the same exact color and look like a little family!
