Glad you found us!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello! I am pretty new to BYC... and chickens in general! I must admit i have a problem collecting chickens... :) They are just so much fun and I am loving getting the eggs every morning! We are up in Ferndale, WA... I have 1 turken, 2 Americanas, 1 banty, 1 barred rock, 1 (not sure, kinda like a barred rock, but a little diff...) 1 Polish Crested rooster ~ Poppy, he is pretty crazy..., 5 black astrolops, and 10 buff orphintons, incluing 1 rooster. we are currently collecting our eggs to put in an incubator soon (probably try with abut 24 or so eggs...) then in a couple months i will be breeding out some of our hens (the buffs with the buffs, a couple friends have a barred rock rooster and an amercana rooster) so that we will be some pure chicks.

i am also getting a couple silkies at the end of the month... i just think they are the coolest things! I have yet to find the purpose of them, but oh well. i look forwardto getting to know someof you!

I do know he has been through much more than I have but as a Mom and watching it all happen it wasnt good. But good thing right now I dont have to make that drive every night..

So Im going to put on a test batch of eggs and see how they are doing, I was thinking of having people do it for me, but know how I feel when they dont hatch. I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh so for everyone getting eggs shipped that dont hatch, it could also be the bad weather the eggs have to travel in, also if you dont know the person you should ask how the hatch's have been going for them.

Thanks for the reminder! Peas and Beans are gonna probably be the only thing I plant this year. Just not sure what verietys are best. Any tips?

Well my hatch went egg-celent also....only 1 fail to pip & the egg quiet so I cracked it on the air cell & yes, a dead baby.
So I have 3 turkeys & 11 Black javas in the bator.....over run with chicks !

Have been trying to catch up with egg orders & answer questions & PMs all day..........

Seems each & every person who wants eggs asks 10 questions, how do they lay ?
How are they in cold ?
Do they go broody often ?
My personal favorite:
Are they a sustainible flock ? (???????????????????????

)
I am coming to hate that word !
Are any chickens sustainible ?
No. You must feed them, water them, house them & protect them.
Most breeds will not increase their numbers by themselves, you have to get in there & isolate & help broody hens.
You really need to incubate & learn to cull weak or inferior birds to keep your flock strong if not to SOP standards...so many questions.

I had a dream last night that DH went up the hill to the turkey hen's hiding nest, and brought back 1 turkey egg and 3 BIG turkey eggs only they were bright blue.
He had the one off-white speckled regulat T egg & the 3 blue ones in his hands & showed me, it was so real I woke up & wondered where he had put them ?
I am egg-zausted............again..........

Me is also thinking it is about time to til the pea patch & plant some snow peas ?

Lately my greatest joy comes from watching my animal charges. Especially the dogs and chickens. Today I was amused watching Bella, our Welsh Corgi have a one on one with a full grown Blue Wheaten Marans rooster. She lives to get things running just so she can chase them but the roo would not back down. Face to face with his hackles raised he never turned and ran. Funny thing, finally one of his hens just came up and pecked Bella on the nose and she decided she was done with all that nonsense and walked off to do some lounging in the sun. That hen followed her and would not leave her alone! Just kept pecking at her! I guess the hen decided her man needed defending till the end. Hmmm, wonder if we need to learn something from these critters. Just sayin.
Bella did ...... she learned the true definition of ........are ya ready for it HEN PECKED ! ! !

in my case it was just bad packing... no protection on the sides.

Just do not get started too soon.
Pease & kole crops should be fine...I have broccoli, beets & garlic & green cabbage doing great right now...need to till in fresh compost & get my pea nets stretched & plant me some snow peas....they go right in the soil.
Inn afew more weeks I will think about getting toms started, then squash & after that, melons & cucs.

This is what we think of the 6 inches of snow we woke up to....

ROTFL! I heartily agree!
Will you be showing any Min Pins at the SKC show this weekend? I'm debating going just to visit and shop, but might save my energy and $ for Monroe instead.

yep Minpins will show at 2 pm on saturday, I will be showing a puppy named Krash for my friend Carol, should be interesting!! maybe see you there

That happens.
Sorry for you !
Every once in a while I run into a shipper who just shoves a carton of eggs in a tight box, no packing & tapes it shut.
I got one such shipment with egg yolk running out all over the Post Office.
The PO had to put the box in a trash bag it was making such a mess.
Every single egg had clacked the egg next to it, every one was cracked.
