my rule of thumb is the chicks drop 5 degrees per week... so either they are 6-8 weeks or they are fully feathered... (under the wings as well) before they go outside with no heat.

I almost said that too....poor girl (Cheryl). She is probably 10 months preggo now.

LMBO!!! Thats how I feel. Im sitting right at 4 weeks. Ive finally come to terms with the fact that I cant make her come any faster. So I feel a little calmer about the situation. Now if I could get my poor DH to relax a little. Poor guy is a nervous wreck, jumps every time iether his cell or work phone rings.

Ive got to be getting close, as those nesting instincts have finally kicked in. My house is cleaner than it has been in months, I cleaned all three horse paddocks yesterday, with the help of my 12 year old brother. Ive got tons of energy, and am running out of things to do! Today I will tackle the bathroom! The easter holliday distroyed it! lol Will also be tackling the girls room again. Seems like as soon as I get it cleaned up, little miss Chloe rips it apart again. Oh well its a never ending battle. At least I can get her to clean her toys up out of the living room. lol Its iether that or they get swept up and tossed.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your quail. I wish you were closer! My friend has over a hundred quail! Do you ever get to Whidbey?

I don't get to whidbey much at all. Today was even more fun. Opened the cage to put food in for the remaining guy and he hopped right out. I ended up chasing him all over the yard and finally I hope, he went into the garage... he's all brown so real hard to see. So I put his food and water in there for him until i can catch him. Oh it was so frustrating...

Question for Western WA locals. Considering local weather, when would be good time to introduce chicks to outside? They are only 1 1/2 weeks right now. I'm assuming its still too chilly for them?
THANKS

I've been known to take them outside on warm sunny afternoons any time after four weeks.

Hellow everyone!!!! I am in Omak, and am super excited to have found this site! I found it when I was researching the idea of getting chickens! Well here I am. A Stay at home mom with 2 adorable children, a husband, 2 dogs, 3 cats, way to many fish and 4 baby chicks! We have two Ameracaunas, a Rhode Island Red and a New Hampshire Red. We started with the Ameracaunas adn found out we could have 4 chickens so went and got a couple more but they were out of what we already had. That is just fine though. We are just wanting chickens for eggs and for entertainment! We are already attached to our 3 week old babies! I can not wait to share and learn! Soo much fun with our lil Peepers. The first two were named by my kids. My daughter is six and named hers Bella, my son is 8 and named his Green Lantern Girl, I just named our two Reds, we got today and decided on Thelma and Louise. Not overly original but I think its cute.

Right now they are enjoying their comfy spot in the house until they are ready to move outside. :) I can not wait for that! Ha Ha!

Thank you all on your responses to when to take the chicks out. I think I will wait a few more weeks then play it by ear depending if we get some warmer days.

I agree with all previous posts. You'll have a good idea when it's time to move them outside. When mine refused to clean up after themselves and were playing music way too loud I told 'em "that's it - you guys are outta here!" We've all gotten along much better since then. Sure I worried at first, but they've grown into mature happy hens, so all is well in the end.

Oh my goodness! Those BLRWs are so beautiful! How do they lay? You are tempting me to get more chicks...

My three RIRs just came today. They are peeping and happy as can be. They all ate and drank right away, so I couldn't really be happier (except if maybe I already had my three EEs!).
