The Iowa Blues came in on Friday the 13th, were hatched on wednesday the 11th. This is true with all of our friday arrivals, as far as I know. We got those from Privett hatchery, I believe.

ok, is it the same with the other ones that came in that lot on the 13th... hatched Wed... or no... ?.. sorry i've just been trying to figure out if she's older or just not normal for her to be lil bigger than they others...lol... i've been calling her Godzilla...hahahaha

Thank you, LovemyBabies!

As a clear indication that I'm new to this, I used "coop" when I meant "run." We're going to use white wood shavings in the coop, but aren't sure how best to floor the run. We don't want to leave the dirt bare, or we'll almost certainly have a mud pit most months of the year. What works well in the rainy climate for an outdoors run?

Is sand a bad idea in the rainy climate? Is gravel a better idea? Any tips for the best floor covering (on top of dirt that, until a few weeks ago, grew only moss and weeds) for our 3x10 foot run?

Sand would be my preference and suggestion. We tried gravel but the dust just made mud when it got really wet over time it then turned into an almost concrete-like pad.

Actually, there was a mix up on the Iowa Blues... was yours a light yellow or a dark blue? We had it mixed up with the blue sumatras originally.... I still have like 3 or 4 of the actual Iowa's left. Hopefully it'll get worked out!
Regarding Rory, he moved to the Sacramento area.
Kmoran, 25 hens is way too many for 1 rooster. I cant think of the right ratio but i think its like 1 rooster to 8 hens? I might be way off.

Ya, you're welcome, K on identifying those chicks. ;)

One of the rules of thumb with roos to hen ratio is 10 to 1, less for breeding purposes to ensure fertility in the eggs.

hahahah well u got me on that one... ours aren't at that stage yet.... ours are only 1 week to 2 weeks old... we'll have our run covered, with somewhat grass & loaded with bugs... so they'll be tickled when they reach that stage ;)

Thought I'd Share ;)

HI,
I live on Bainbridge Island and am delighted to know there are so many Washington State members here. I bought my chicks from Bay Hay and Feed (our local feed store) end of Feb. I have four Australorps, two Marans and two Americaunas. This is my first excursion into chickens. I also have six small dogs, five of whom are rescues. A friend built me a fancy chicken coop and since I live on acreage, they have a big fenced run. We have a problem here with raccoons, weasels, minks and coyotes so my coop has an internal small run that is very well protected.
I hope there are other Bainbridge folks here as well.
Annette

Hi LOL!

I'm on N Madison, near Wilkes.

Ah sorry, misunderstood. Sounds like a pain, but I wonder how actual breeders do it. I'll watch for a real answer too :p

No worries. I dunno how its done either I never had a roo before but there are a lot of great breeders on here so hopefully we will find out
