How did you do it? Its so hard they are very healthy except for those feet.

How I cull chicks

It is never fun to cull a chick. Not only are they cute, but seemingly helpless as well. But, a chick with a birth defect (hatch defect?) is better off (in my opinion) culled rather than forced to endure a painful, difficult life.

Tools: Small zip lock bag. Hand held pruning sheers.

I put the chick inside the bag. I use my weak hand (left) to hold the chicks body from outside the bag. The bag is open, so that I can put the sheers into the bag. I quickly snip off it's head. I keep a firm hold on the body of the chick, as there is a wee bit of 'death throes' it goes through. Any blood, and there is very little, is contained within the bag. When the body is still, I zip up the bag and put dispose of it. I believe the death is instant and the chick does not feel anything.

I am never happy about having to do this, and I always apologize to the bird.

My mother-in-law needs her two llamas and two alpacas shorn (I think that's the right word - it's looks weird, though).

Does anyone have any recommendations? She's in Olympia.

So cute!! How old are they in those pics?! They just hatched 4 days ago on Mother's Day???

I have 4 Serama eggs in the 'bator right now. So far I haven't had any luck hatching Seramas, though.
Well I have a list of chores a mile long to get done the next couple of days, but it seemed a lot more important to play with the chicks and start trying to get good identifying photos of them. Priorities people! These chicks don't stay little forever you know! I can't believe how much the Seramas have changed just since Mother's Day when they were born.

These are my first Seramas, and here's what I love about them, besides the obvious - being that they are so tiny and irresistably cute - but when I pick them up to try and take photos, they allow themselves to be picked up easily. It is only when I put them down to take a photo that they squawk! As soon as they are back in my hand, they settle down and often go to sleep within seconds. This is incredibly appealing to one's instinct to nurture...

So here are my 4 Seramas from Laura of Castle Delight Seramas. Hope you guys aren't too bored with my sharing. I can't wait to see how they feather out, and how many boys or girls I have!

Dadie Sue, your serama babies are seriously stinkin adorable - what sweet little faces. How long before you can tell if they are hims or hers?

Well from what I've read, some say 2 or 3 weeks, some say 8 weeks. So I'm going to guess by 4 weeks I may have a clue or two. I think you can start seeing comb differences by then.
And thank you, I'm thinking they're pretty darn cute too!

Yes, they just hatched 4 days ago! The photos are somewhat deceiving, because these babies are TINY. I am surprised how much feathering they have on their little wings already.
I have heard that Seramas can be very difficult to hatch. I was prepared going in that I could be disappointed and frankly I don't think my hatch rate was all that great, but from what I'm hearing I was lucky to get any to hatch at all. I started with 14 eggs. After one week I tossed several that were clear. During the second week I found a couple that were early quitters. By lock down I could see that I had another quitter - just a tiny dark blob much smaller than the others that was free floating inside the egg.

So out of the 14, only 6 eggs went into lock down. Of those 6, only 4 hatched. The other two never pipped.

I feel very fortunate to have these 4. They are pretty special.

Thank you VelvettFog. I don't want to do it but if I can't cull these then I should not be hatching them. I might do it tomorrow when my daughter is still asleep. she has gotten attached to them which makes it even harder to do.
