Just had the Silkie babies out for photos. Not happy having their pictures taken. They would much prefer to be cuddled.
I am confused about their colors. Two eggs were marked "PA" which I thought Karen had told me was paint. I know paint does not breed true, so I have no idea how these will turn out! Pretty sure they won't look paint though. So one of the paints looks black and I may even have the black and paint confused. I was trying hard to keep them all straight as they hatched, making notes, but when they dried they looked different! The egg marked blue/splash I'm sure who hatched out of there, but this baby looks a lot bluer than splash. So may turn out blue, maybe splash on a blue background? Who knows? I guess the fun will be the journey of discovery. I love them all.

So here they are! I believe this is one from a mystery "PA" egg. Love the attitude! And great leg feathering!

This is the other "PA" chick. If I had to make an uneducated guess, it looks more partridge to me.

Here's my blue splash baby (maybe vaulted skull) - who had to work VERY hard to get out of her shell. She's valiant! (and she had just stepped in poo - sorry!)

Pretty sure this is my vaulted skull black baby

Definitely the vaulted skull Lavender baby

And lastly, my beautiful porcelain sweetie.

Quote: Just switched mine to nipple waterers yesterday. I left the other water in for the day yesterday and pulled it last night so they would be thirsty this morning. I showed them this morning and after 1 got it they all followed suit. Pretty easy. And I agree that not having to clean poop and gunk out of the waterers all the time will be fantastic.

That's encouraging to hear. I've seen a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that has water nipples underneath that can either be hung or wall mounted that I'd like to switch over to. Cleaning out the waterer has gotten SO tiresome.
Where did you see the 5gallon that can be hung OR wall mounted? I would like to look at it. I think I am going to make one to put one out in the run.

CR: I coud not "quote" your comment - but YOU DON'T LIKE BBQ!!!!

Are you human? LOL. We have a Traeger and I cook on it as much as possible during the summer. Absolutely love it.

Okay, no BBQ for you. what else could I feed you to lure you away from the birds?..."look away from the birds"...."move away from the birds".

FireWifeJess: Talk to VF. He tells me he loves building coops.

Sun: Post photos of your EE and the pros on here should be able to help you. I just don't know EEs well (at all) and I may lead you astray. Sorry.
Well of course I like ! But not if it is intended to distract me from the task at hand. Stealing yer chickens!

Just stopping in to say "Hi". I'm way behind on reading posts, so I'm just going to jump back in right here. Our 5-week-old chicks are doing great. My EE dug a hole in ground of my greenhouse today and began to dust bathe. I've read about it on this site - but reading about it isn't the same as seeing it. That's certainly strange looking.

Today we installed a gravity-based nipple water system in the garage pen. I haven't actually seen them drink from it. I'm hoping they'll learn how. We tried to show them what to do. I'm not exactly sure how to know if they've got the idea down or not without sitting in the garage watching them until I see each of them drink. Any suggestions?
Here is the watering system that I put together for my birds, I am so pleased with this set up I won't use anything else. I have had chicks a week old using nipples also geese and turkeys.

I should note that 5 gallons will last a week with 10 LF.

yes! What section are the nipples in at the hardware store? How much do they - and the immersion heater- run?

Oh that's close! Assuming you were talking to me, pretty sure I'm the only one in Covington here :) if you want some more 7 week olds let me know, I'm gonna get rid of my Delaware, one Buff Orpington, and a Welsummer. We should meet though!
