I looked through the window of the incubator and instead of 2 silkie eggs pipping... (I can actually see their beaks) There is also 1 Black copper Maran egg pipping too. OH the excitement.... I am loving this.

I decided I didn't like the black copper maran eggs because they are such a dark chocolate color that I can't see anything at all when candling them. My daughter likes to see the development inside the eggs. The maran eggs are chocolate eggs and we can't see anything.

Anything to encourage her in a scientific way, I am happy to do. Most of the time she is the little princess.

Today she went to feed the chickens and managed to let all of them loose. I had been inside with the dogs so went outside with them. Right away our brittany saw loose birds and went on the hunt. He even managed to get one. (UGH!!!!!!!!!) Luckily my youngest caught the dog by the collar and gave the dog a smack on the nose along with telling the dog NO. The brittany dropped the bird who promptly ran into the open door of the pen. So no birds lost today. Thank goodness. I chained both dogs up on a 25 foot chain each for the night. Just to be on the safe side.

and of course it wasn't one of my chickens but one of my friends that are here.

And that is my day.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE (and be forever indebted to you for) a gluten free RECIPE. Right now we just found the Bob's Red Mill GF pizza dough mix and while it was tasty, I don't want to have to pay for that every time I want pizza. I was so happy the kids ate all their pizza too! We also can't have dairy or soy (yeah, tell me about it!

) so the pizza had no cheese but it was still yummy with bacon, homemade sauce in our new Vitamix (DH bought it for me as a surprise a few days ago!!!), and olives. YUM.

Hey I'm so excited, the girls finally figured out where to roost! They will be 8 weeks old tomorrow! I went to "tuck them in" tonight and they were all at eye level on the highest roost fighting over the spot to the far right. I'm wondering though, they are seriously AWFUL to each other when they fight over the roost space! Is this normal for them to peck at each others' necks and faces to fight for a better position? I know there's a pecking order but so far all evidence I've seen of that comes with body language and "standoffs" between two birds at a time, not all of them having a free for all over a roost location! OK, rant over. Calm me down and reassure me they are happy and just learning how to do the whole chicken thing.

And how grows Illia's Garden ??????????

It's about time lol!!

Colored tomatoes are THE BEST. There is NO boring red tomato that beats them. Especially green tomatoes and orange tomatoes, oh my goodness. Some orange varieties out there literally taste like candy-sweet tangerines, some greens are just indescribably amazing. Oh and purples. Never enough purples.

This fall I plan to have a ton of seeds available to sell, because man do I love opening more people up to heirloom colored tomatoes. The oldest variety of tomato out there is in fact not red.

You know when one is ripe by how soft it feels. Also, after a while you just know. For example I had a variety last year that supposedly gave striped pink tomatoes, well, I got tomatoes of all kinds of colors and yet still knew when they were ripe. Colors like green, yellow, and white will go from a firm and opaque fruit to a slight give to the press, and the color will be more translucent. Also, some whites and yellows will have a green tinge at the base when unripe. Green tomatoes are ripe when the green color turns a more golden brownish green, and they're softer to the touch.

I'll have to try some of those next year! This year: chickens. Next year: garden

We had to choose unfortunately, because I have 3 kids 5 and under and couldn't do it all, including schooling them. eesh. I think once we have the whole chicken lifestyle down pat, then I'll add in a garden. We already have a fantastic pre-made space in the yard for one too!! Will try to remember to plant some of those awesome tomatoes though.
