I wish we had the money right now for an incubator...I really want to try it out! I couldn't keep the chicks though Gotta get the stuff we already have all set and beautified before I expand

Where are you located??? If you are close enough you could use mine, I also have and egg turner for it. Then if you can't keep the chicks you could bring them here with you when you bring the incubator back! Just an idea!!!!

SO....I think Princess is on the mend! She spent the whole day in the coop or run. Panting with her mouth open. It's not hot out there, there's a light breeze and all the other girls seem fine, BUT...she ate and drank incessantly for a whole 15 minutes while I was out there! She's quite picky though...all the big girls eat all of the grains Scratch and Peck has to offer but she sorts though them and only eats the tiny stuff

She makes mess of the water too, because all the tiny crumbs stick to her face and then she plunges her whole beak and face into the water

Weirdo. She finally pooped (what I was waiting for) and it was normal with just a little bit of water to it, which signaled to me that she was just too hot. I need a thermometer in the coop and/or run I think, but just standing out there it wasn't hot and it was shady. I'm just happy to have seen her eating and drinking of her own accord, and poop that wasn't bloody!

No not cedar chips. Just the regular bark chips from Home Depot. There are cedar chips and you can get cedar mulch, but you wouldn't want that. itsren if your cedar chips have beed outside for a long time they shoudn't be toxic anymore. It's the oils in the wood that can cause a problem. Should be washed away.

Really? Awesome! The cedar chips are 5 years old. Yay! I can quit being such a helicopter-chicken-mom and stop chasing them out of the chips. There must be bugs of some sort in the chips because they really want to dig in them for some reason.

I talked to a friend today and told her I'd been worried about Princess and she had slept in the house, I syringed her liquids, etc...she said that bird would have been dead meat at her house. I don't get it. Wouldn't most people try to help a sick or injured bird, rather than cull? I also know she culled a chick last week who was huddled in a corner. I asked if she gave any meds and she said she never would.

Anyone else like that, or is she the minority?

I'd love that only I was hoping to find close to the same age chicks to go with the chicks we have now that way they grew up together & not have flock that doesn't bond together. I just lost a chicken that never bonded with the flock, everytime she got scared she ran away from the flock & that's how the Owl got her.

The funny thing about Bonney Lake is that our road is split down the middle, we are on the Lake Tapps side & the other side is Bonney Lake. So we are outside city limits by half the road lol. We are near Lake Ridge Middle School off of Myers Rd.

I grew up next to Lake Jane. Back when I lived there - all the roads were gravel. Bonney Lake wasn't even a city yet - and the only restaurant that was even in the area was the Dairy Queen that sits atop Hwy 410. Shoot! I just dated myself...

now I'm starting all those "back when I was a kid" stories.

So...how old are you? I kinda think you can't be that old, your kids are pretty young still I'm 29
