For the conversation a couple days ago, about adding a member page.

There was apparently a glitch that has been fixed. The "Add a Member Page" button is back.

How much would one expect to pay for a 13 week pullet at that auction? I might go over there on Saturday just to see if there's any age appropriate pullets I could add to our flock...but I'm cheap and not going to pay $20 for a bird ;)

I'm with you on that, because let's face it, 5 or six birds would be enough for Sand Hill order. I bought some awesome hens from the Orting Chicken Man for $20, because I was desperate for eggs. I imagine that pullets would be much cheaper at auction. I might bring some cockerels to the Sales Pavillion in Enumclaw. I have only heard good stories from other chicken people, they all quarantined.

(Insert inspirational saying about taking chances.)

(insert apology for any chickeneer that might like to rub their own agenda all over you.)

Have fun, I am excited for you.

Good morning, All! I thought I'd post a few pics of the chickens and coop. I can't believe how much they've all changed! We're also looking to re-home four cockerels: 2 bantam mottled cochins, one BLRW and one GLW. All are tame and raised by the kids. If you're in the area, they're free to a good PET home :)

This is "Nugget" as in...chicken nugget. The kids came up with that one. figures, huh? He needs a new home.

GLW...un-named, poor guy. He's just starting to get those gorgeous beetle green sickle feathers on his tail.

Cochin bantam #1...and #2 looks pretty much the same except for variations in spots. We call them Fozzy and Beaker. Gonzo turned out to be a hen, so she's staying :)

Finished run: hog fencing with chicken wire, bird netting over PVC pipe. It's inside the pasture, which is 3 strand electric fence. The coop locks securely at night. Note the kid's lawn chairs....'cause watching the chickens is better than tv :)

Robin ( L) and Mabel (R). Mabel's my favorite :)

Ruby Partridge plymouth rock

Second batch of babies. They all stick together. Golden comets, speckled sussex (x 2) another light brahma and another EE.

It's fun to look back at all the pics that we took when they were really little. It's become a family thing...every night we all traipse out to the coop to bring in the chickens ...who are spoiled and get all the kitchen scraps then. If some body doesn't want to be found for awhile, (eh hem) they're usually out in a lawn chair in the coop having some "chicken time". :)

If I were you - I'd find the breed I liked, or wanted to sell, and get them from good stock. Ask here, or go to the hatching eggs forum. The folks around this thread have some beautiful chickens

As far as do the eggs pay for themselves - it depends on a lot of factors.

How much did you pay, did you ship, how many hatched, how long do you wait to sell, how many are boys, how long do you keep them, how much feed did they eat, and how much did you sell them for?

When I do sell, I tend to not make a dime, and probably spend a bit. That's mostly because I feed expensive feed and keep them until the broody mamas are finished or they start crowing.

And they eat A LOT when they are growing. I'm always amazed at how much feed I can go through when the chicks are 5-12 weeks old.

Thanks Itsren. Felix has a twin brother named Oscar. He's a hoot and he's healthy as a horse. We also have our rescue (he was 2 weeks old, found him in the road) cat Smoky who is now 2yrs and is a lovey dovey little indoor/outdoor mouser. Felix and Oscar are Persians, inside cats and spoiled.

Oooh. My favorite cat. Before I met my husband, I had Persians (many years ago). DH is not a cat person. Bummer. He (the cat, not DH) was a rescue. Sadly, he didn't live long. When I adopted him, he had very bad ringworm. The vet shaved him and gave him medicine, but he ended up dying that week. I ended up getting ringworm from him.

My 2nd Persian (another rescue) was healthy as could be. Bubbles was healthy, but the other Persian that she came with, was not, and the vet had to put him to sleep. So sad! Bubbles was an absolute sweetheart. She wasn't like typical cats - she'd let me bathe her once a week. She would sit patiently in the sink and let me wash her. Then, she snuggled in my arms in a towel until she dried. Then, she'd wait patiently until I brushed her. It was amazing. Any other cat would have clawed me. She, too, was spoiled. I was so crazy about her - I have even have professional photos of me with her.

She had the cutest Garfield cat bed - it was so adorable. And, yes, she ate out of a crystal dish.

So, after all the hard work on the beautiful coop, the pullets don't like it. When the automatic door opened this morning, they looked terrified. Tonight, they didn't want to go back in. They were pushing hard to go back in the house to get to the garage.

I hope they get used to it. Granted, the garage was probably warmer.

Well, WE love it. I'll post a picture soon.
Chickens take awhile to re-program sometimes. I have a pullet and cockerel that took a week to learn to go into their new home, and after 2 weeks the pullet wants to roost on top of the coop! I have put her on the roost the last two nights, I am sure it will be many more. sigh. They will get used to it you just might have to be there to put them in every night for awhile. And probably shoo them out a coupe of times. Don't worry!
