Sure DW and I just traded in our trailer for a shorter one (28' down to 25') with a floor plan that we like better. As we were driving it home (yesterday) she turns to me and says, "Now we can go on more coop-building trips!".

I am very new. I don't even have my chicks yet, but I am finishing the coop and yard now. I am looking for some locally hatched chicks to start my flock with. I want nice friendly egg layers that will not attack me like the rooster my mom had years ago. I was looking at Black Australorp, Delaware, Sex Links, or Speckled Sussex as my top 4 breeds, I also love the Lavender Cochin, and the Plymouth Rock. My husband has limited me to 5 hens (for now). ; ) What would be good choices for friendliness and egg production? Any young chicks available around Western Washington? Thank You for any information.

Hi Shyla. The only feed store I know of that still has chicks is Monroe feed. Lot of people on here sell chicks . They would be a good & safe bet to buy from. We have a lot of Great people here ! I wouldn't buy from Chicken Rustler because anything you buy from him was probably Borrowed from somebody else

Everyone is going to give you a different opinion on what Breed is the Friendliest. Maybe some breeds as a whole might be a little friendlier then others but it depends on the individual chicken!

the breeds you mentioned (1) Bl Australorp - one out of my three is friendly the other 2 aren't (2) Delaware- neither one of my TWO are friendly! (3) sexlinks- I have two gold sexlinks (Anne & Oakley) they are both very friendly and one Black sexlink, it isn't friendly (4) Speckled Sussex- I have two BOTH are VERY friendly, they love to talk! one has three babies that are a week old. (5) Plymouth Rock- I have two neither are friendly

Other breeds I bought two RIR's at the same time. one is my most friendly chicken out of the 31 chickens I have. the other was the meanest of the flock and is NO longer with us! I have a California White (white egg) who wants to come into the house all the time.

Best egg layers in my opinion ? #1 white leghorn (white egg) #2 sexlinks #3 Bl Australorp

I'm sure lots of others on here will give you their opinion

I'm still trying to talk him into chickens.
If you can't find anyone to take your rooster Monroe Farm & Feeds will take him.

Thanks for the info FirewifeJess, I have been to Baxter Barn and Seattle Farm Supplies websites and have been trying to pick one, but maybe I should visit both.

Thank you RonB for your input, I really appreciate any input I can get before I make the plunge into chicken-hood!

I vote Ameracuanas (blue eggs) & Easter Eggers (basically mutt - blue/green/pink eggs).

I have also had not nice girls, and they are sold on craigslist.

Blue or Black Copper Marans for a nice, dark egg (but not as proficient layers.)

However - I live close to Ron B so I can get extra eggs when I run low

I recently added white egg layers, too - Brabanters. They are the SWEETEST girls.

I got the eggs from a member here and hatched them from an incubator rather than broody hen (our normal method of hatching chicks.)

They are almost twelve weeks now and I can walk up to them and pick them up easily.

I think it has a lot more to do with them being hatched by incubator than the breed of chick, though.
