Unfortunately, it's illegal to discharge firearms in the burbs. But I would like to add, that keeping chickens should be easy and enjoyable. I too was obsessed in the beginning with predator protection, especially eagles. For the past few years I had been living in Bonners Ferry, ID, and had wolves and moose in my yard. The girl at the Buckley feed store assured me that predators are looking for an easy meal, especially here, where there are trash cans. My advice to those of you obsessing over predators, is to take a deep braeath, and get a security light.

I would also like to point out that county law says each chicken is only required to have one square foot to live in. Any thing you do beyond that one square foot is fabulous, so quit worrying, because asking and wondering already proves you are a good chicken parent.
And that is why SSS. a quick .22 shot is barely noticed.
I wouldn't depend on a security light to keep predators away.
And IMHO ANYBODY who is keeping chickens with 1 SF of space. Need to by made to live that way themselves. They do not deserve to have any animals.

I am such an idiot! We had the most amazing thunderstorm here last night around 3am. It seemed to be right on top of us. It started pouring (here in the desert that is welcomed!) and it clicked that I had left the coop windows open (there's wire in front of them to keep predators out). Like a dummy, I decided to run out and close them. The coop is towards the back of our 2 acres. I made it into the coop and as I was going to go back and the lightening seemed to be all around, the realization of how stupid it was for me to go outside finally hit me. After I ran back into the house I kinda internally freaked out!!! I've never been worried about lightening storms until THAT one!
I don't go out in lightning, EVER. I was on a horseback riding trip in th mountains one time and we had lots of thunder and lightning storms that trip.
One day when I stayed in camp with a few others it started to get stormy so I ran to the tent "real quick" to get a sweatshirt or something.
While I was in there, I felt the hair on my arms start to stand up, then lightning struck about 25 feet or so from me and started a tree fire.
That is as close to being struck by lightning as I ever want to get.

In Navy boot camp down in Florida during the summer (Thunderstorms every night you could set watch by), I was right behind one of the flag bearers who had a nice metal pole and was carrying it level to the ground. I don't know how the bolt missed us. It hit the ground five feet in front of her. The world was white for a moment when it hit. Then we were wearing bits of dirt. A second time we had a bolt hit the building we were next to. We'd JUST gotten under cover of the awning. There were some huge chunks of concrete that were blown off.

I have much respect for lightning.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself as I am trying to learn everything I can on here and am hoping to have a wonderful batch of chickens that are both pets and helping me become more self-sufficient. I am currently active duty Navy up in Oak Harbor. I am planning to stay in area when I get out to finish my schooling. I don't have any chickens yet, but I would love some dorkings, cochins, and I would love a pair of Serama's as pet birds... Hope everyone is having a great Sunday.

These are also good examples why one should respect electricity. No need to fear it but respect it.

You're going to learn a lot here! Do you have coop yet? I have a friend with a trio of Dorkings born in late April. She can't keep any roosters so would like the trio to go together and would be willing to let them go easily. (Read "cheeply".)
She had only gotten the eggs so her constantly broody Cuckoo Marans would have a job to do for a while.
PM me if you're interested.

The thread moves fast so hold onto your hat!

I now understand about chicken brokers. I went to Egdewood Chicks yesterday. It was disgusting, and she doesn't quarantine. She buys chicks and whatever from craigslist and local auctions, and sells it out of a cage. The cages of juveniles had no shade or protection, although she might pull them into a shed at night, I don't know. She just started keeping chickens, and admits she hardly knows anything. I really hope she sells her cochin pullet before the four cockerels get randy.

I told her she should look for info here, and that maybe some of you had advicce for her.
Thanks for info. Glad I never bothered to stop by.

hey guys ! How is everyone ?

We have sent 18 to freezer camp yesterday and have another 18 or so to do today.
But it has been raing all day~~~~~~~~~~~DH got a tarp to hang over the butcher sink/scalder/plucker area so we can continue.
Ya know 12 hours before butchering you should with hold feed, but I still let them graze on grass.
This makes it much cleaner & easier to process without poo every where or full packed crops.

So we have to get out there & do the deed or feed.
So far the corn balls are running 9-11 #................and they are constantly starving even when they have feed before them..............it is time.

Other than that, lumber should arrive next Tuesday or so....then have to buy yet another tarp..........

Later peeps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have two pullets that need to go, they will be 3 months on the 23rd. What are they you ask they are black Copper Marans crossed with Black Orpington so the eggs will be on the darker side. One hen has copper on her hackles the other one not to much. Id just like a good home for them so not asking much. they both have feathers on the legs too. I also have to BCM roosters that need to go. Im going to take them all to the auction on Sat if I cant find a home so thats why Im not asking to much for them. They are all really nice birds.

Do you have any pictures of the pullets? I need a third chicken for my flock.
