So yesterday I did something stupid and it's resulted in me losing one of my sweet 4 month old Serama pullets. My two boys and two girls have been occupying a couple of rabbit cages in the house, so I try to put them outside for a while each day in the 4X4 covered X-pen. The pen is on the upper deck just 10 steps from the kitchen door. Last evening as I was bringing them in, I accidentally left the door to the pen ajar on one of my trips in and out of the house.

I had brought the boys in, was refilling the waterer in the kitchen and found that in my 2 minute absence that Wren, our little brown pullet had just disappeared. I looked over all sides of the deck to the yard below where all the LF were free ranging and didn't see her. I looked up in the trees and didn't see her or any other birds that might have swooped down and gotten her. Later my Golden Retriever was crying at the gate leading to the front yard and then joined me on the top deck overlooking the front yard and was still whining. He seemed to be indicating to me that she might have jumped up on the railing and gone over so I leashed him and had him try to track her in the front. No luck.

This morning when the boys started crowing in the house I thought maybe she'd come out of hiding to try and find everyone. I looked under bushes, cars, up in the trees, calling her but neither saw nor heard her.

I'm so annoyed with myself for leaving the X-pen door open. Two minutes and it's like she vanished into thin air. This was a very sweet girl who loved to be held and petted and would just coo herself to sleep in your lap.

And I also want to add that although I gripe and moan about DH often, that this morning he was out in the yard bright and early doing a thorough search for our lost girl. He may be a pain in the neck, but he's got a big heart. I guess that's just one of the reasons I've kept him around for 21 years.

So, we keep looking. Keep a good thought for us please that our tiny chicken comes home.

This morning I was up and out in the yard bright and early and heard a new sound coming from my grow out coop.  :(   My big, beautiful, 100% imported English blue Orpington boy has started to crow.  I was hoping I'd be able to grow him out more just because he's so pretty but that won't be happening now.  I should have known he was feeling his oats - the past week I've seen him fluff up and charge my little Pomeranian who is smart enough to take off in a hurry.  This morning he ruffled his feathers at one of the Ameraucana girls and she put him in his place.

He's just over 4 months old, born the second week of May.  He was raised in the house.  This is the boy who used to sit on DH's shoulder while he played video games on the computer.  He's been great company but needs to find a new home, hopefully with some nice girls to hang around with.  He's always been the flock leader for the two English blue girls I'm keeping.

Good price to BYCer's.  PM me if you're interested.  I can post updated photos later today since I'll need them to place a Craigslist ad anyway.

Here's a few baby pictures of him.  Here he is with DH when he was just about 4 weeks old.  And HUGE.

8 weeks old - he's on the far right.  Of course, now at 17 weeks he's considerably larger and still has a long ways to grow!

You know, I'd consider bringing him in with his brother, but I'd be worried he wouldn't adjust well to coop life after being raised in the house. And I need to sell the black roo before putting a third in there.

Anyone want a black 100% English roo about 14 weeks old so I could take the blue roo?

So sorry! I hope you find her!

Oh, he'd be happy to be in your coop! He was raised in the house until he was 8 weeks old, but has been outside in the mini-coop for the past 2 months. He's been running around the yard happily free ranging and returns on his own to the mini-coop every evening so he's well trained as far as being a "normal" chicken.
If you're interested, I'll let you have him for the same price that his brother was!
Let me know...

Okay, gotta sell the black then. I'd love two blue roos for the girls. Oh, and I have a young black hen you could have in his place....about 8 weeks old...

ANYONE???

Here's a pic of the black and one of SadieSue's roo's brother just for kicks :) (I wonder if he's not crowing yet because there's another roo in there with him and a pretty dominant hen) --

Perhaps you thought it was a tad cooler in the Seattle area today than one might hope to experience in August.

Well, count yourself lucky.

The following report comes from The Spokesman-Review in Spokane:

The National Weather Service this afternoon has issued a freeze warning for sheltered valleys in Northeast Washington overnight.

Temperatures could fall to as low as 29 degrees between 3 and 7 a.m., forecasters said.

Cities identified in the warning include Chewelah, Colville, Deer Park, Newport, Kettle Falls, Republic, Inchelium and Wauconda.

Cool air has moved over the Inland Northwest in the wake of a dry cold front overnight.

Spokane could see a low of 43 tonight.

Temperatures will rebound starting on Saturday with highs in the lower 80s going to about 90 on Sunday under sunny skies as fair weather continues into early next week.

Thunderstorms may arrive by Tuesday.

We hit 36 here on thursday night, and 37 last night. A lot of the leaves on my blueberries have turned red. It's not quite 29 degrees but I was surprised by it dropping so low this early.

What's the earliest you'd switch a flock to layer feed if you had babies in it? My smallest girls are currently 11.5 weeks old. I have enough feed for maybe 2 more weeks. Is that way too soon to go to layer? Or should I just suck it up and pay out the few extra dollars for grower again, until they're 16 weeks?
Id suck it up and by some more if it was me. Im going to be buying chick starter and grower all year I think .

Hey All,

I missed you! School starts next week for the kiddos (both in middle school now), so I should have more time to spend here. I have had one BUSY summer!

Just got back from a long weekend of wine-tasting in Walla Walla with friends. On Friday I walked with a friend just looking at all the cool old houses and parks and such. So many homes had vegetable gardens in the strip between the sidewalk and street! I was envious of all the ripe tomatoes and zucchini, wondering if mine will ripen before fall. We walked for about 6 hours in 100 degree heat. We went for a late lunch and I had the waitress fill my water bottle, but the trout tacos came, and I forgot about the water. That evening we walked back to town with when more friends arrived. I was feeling off, everything had a surreal feeling to it, so I hardly touched my wine or food. Got up the next morning so dehydrated and dizzy that I passed out while trying to get water from the bathroom tap. I fell hard on the marble floor. I cut myself from my shoulder to bum on a towel rack. Thankfully my head landed in a cardboard magazine holder and did not hit the floor. One side of me is all black and blue, and I feel like I have been in a car accident! Years ago when I lived in California, I fainted several times when I'd get up in the morning - first when I hit puberty and in college usually after a long day spent cycling or cross country skiing. I seem to lack a sense of thirst, so I usually set myself a schedule to keep hydrated, but I completely forgot while I was away. I drank a bunch of electrolytes and other than being really sore, I think I am fine. It may be that other thing too, at the opposite end of puberty!

My hens are still laying like mad! The dogs found another nest in the woods full of eggs. Blue egg-layers seem to hide the most eggs. I am hoping to get rid of some roosters by fall. I still have the 3 beautiful bantam cochins. I made friends with the garden hose when I need to go near Cinnamon S--- Head, and he is a good boy now. He runs to the back of the run whe he sees any human approach, no more garden hose needed. The other boys will eat from my hands. I still have the 4 chicks that belong to DD's friend, only now 3 of them are crowing. That mkes it 10 roosters and 23 hens! It is much too noisy here! At least the eggs are yummy - I have been mixing my scrambles with Walla Walla onions and the Washington cheese that comes in a can (and I have to admit, as wrong as it sounds, canned cheese tastes good! much better than the squirty stuff in a tube we'd eat during camping trips in the 70's)

I bought myself a scale for my birthday. Stepped on it and was quite frightened by the numbers - the Dr's scale is correct! I am now going for a walk every morning and I go canoeing or hiking or swimming in the evenings. I've lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks (but it all cuts into the time I spend here too). When I went to the festival at Mt. Si, I bought myself a salad for lunch, and took what I would have spent on an elephant ear and donated it to a woman who walks for a cure for Crohn's. I won the raffle! $50 steak dinner, a great, big water bottle, tape measure and a few other random items. I found that woman to be quite inspiring. She had weighed over 400 and had a heart attack at 38 years old. She has now walked off 150 pounds! Her first walk she fractured her foot right at the start, but kept walking because she was afraid she'd die from the next heart attack if she gave up. I don't have quite as much to lose, but I am using her example to keep me motivated - not sure what I will do when the rain starts up again; maybe I'll buy myself a raincoat and walk in it.
OH my gosh Im so sorry, be careful. I know in June and July I was doing things like that, fell outside and than again droped a table on my foot.
