Kale, quinoa, nuts, lentil all good sources of protein!

I knew quinoa was. I like it. My kids won't eat it. I didn't know kale or lentils were.

2 of my kids and I are allergic to nuts. We can't have them at all. That's a HUGE bummer, when mixed with my other allergies. I'm finding all kinds of egg-free recipes, but they usually have my other big allergies in the recipe.

Imagine trying to take the following completely out of your diet: Eggs, Pork/Ham, Nuts, Cinnamon, Garlic

Do you know how many foods have cinnamon and garlic in them? Finding egg-free food is bad enough!

Jessica took me to a bakery that specializes in baking for those with food allergies. They carry egg-free items, but those items either contain nuts or cinnamon. Out of the entire bakery, they only had 1 muffin that I could eat. I've been back 3 times since, and they haven't had that particular muffin in stock.

What is this? It looks like a porcupine crossed with a puppy. It's cute as could be! I want one. LOL!

Can you eat duck eggs or is it all eggs. I know someone that cannot eat chickens eggs but can eat duck eggs.

Yep I got my Pinky from Royce/Tailfeathers. Love this girl. I had a friend hatch the eggs I got from Royce & my broodie hen raised them.

BEAUTIFUL!! I love the green around her collar!
Bwahahaha, that's what's so funny about our diet. It's just kind of a joke. We won't eat animal products that are mass produced because they're inhumane, meaning we barely eat any meat at all including chicken. I will only eat chicken from friends' farms, the ones I processed last month, etc. We also only eat fish that wasn't mass caught (fish from friends who caught them and killed them humanely, etc). I know, we're weird, but we have just really been convinced that the quality of food is way more important, as is humane treatment of animals. If we aren't able to acquire humane meat, we don't eat it. Maybe vegetarian plus those things would be better description? LOL

We arent 100% dairy free. Im a drop host for raw grass fed organic milk. Were workin on gluten, but man... I love my bread :(
Man, I wish I could get completely on board. I struggle to implement these habits for any length of time. I was diagnosed 5yrs ago with celiac which means not even a crumb of gluten allowed. I struggled for 3yrs trying to steer clear of gluten, but working a full-time job made it very difficult. I did not feel any different so I gave it up over the last year & half. Come to find out many issues I'm having is due to fibromyalgia and neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). My doctor is sending me back to the GI Dr to probably have another scope because of very persistant and worsening heartburn & acid reflux. A gluten-free diet is going to reappear in my life, I'm sure. Now that I'm not working anymore hopefully it will be easier to implement this. Humane meat can be expensive and non-processed food can be difficult as there are days when I can barely get out of bed and function, let alone cook. Sad thing is that I believe it will make me feel better (and hopefully lose tons of weight, which will also help) if I can just push thru.

Hello friends,
I've been lurking for months and I've noticed we have so many new people.
A belated welcome to you all!

Some of you know my son was overseas. I'm so happy to report that he's back, safe and sound.

Which means I'm up for a party!

Who wants to get together?

The photo is of my first year "cottage" garden. Mostly fragrant flowers, herbs, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and the yummiest Italian plums.
So delicious to go out and water the gardens these beautiful September mornings!
GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure they are girls?

Pretty sure. There was some concern about the one on the left with the bigger comb who is more aggressive and food-motivated, but at 4.5 months, we'd be hearing crowing by now, no? Here's a pic from a week ago. They look pretty hen-y to me. They both have bigger combs now than in this pic. Keep in mind they are Leghorns (probably with some Ancona mixed in), so their combs should ultimately be quite huge for a hen.

Well I'm not from either side of WA but I ran an experiment last winter on natural light and egg production. I use no artificial light or heat in my coop here in Mich. I used my flock of 6 hens as my control group. They were all laying by Thanksgiving so I began the analysis on December 1 and compared egg output to number of hours of natural daylight.
The average per day was: Dec = 4; Jan = 3; Feb = 2.5; Mar = 2 and Apr = 2.75.
I then compared that to the counts of some 14 other chicken keepers who did the same experiment (no artificial light, no heat) and from all over the country from Texas to Maine to Georgia to Michigan UP. Data was then analyzed on a biological statistics programme.

The conclusion was that there was no direct correlation between available daylight and egg output with a confidence of 0.005. The experiment earned me a B-minus in my Bio-Stats class.

Granted that was only one experiment and more data would certainly help. Especially a comparison to chickens with artificial light present. But I'm going to stick with natural light with no extras.

Something that occurred to me that I didn't think about for the experiment...My coop has two (2) windows that are each 15 sq. ft. in area. I have no idea what my other folks had for window size. Now that I'm graduated, I just came up with a better experimental design.

My personal experience is the exact opposite. Last fall I had egg production drop from ~14 a day to under 8. I added lighting and within a week I was back to about 14 eggs a day. Also, without tracking moulting, I'm not sure your experiment can be considered accurate. (and what other factors would come into play - like you mentioned windows)
