THE CARING GRANDFATHER

A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his
badly behaved 3 year-old grandson.
It's obvious to her that he has his hands full with the child
screaming for sweets in the sweet aisle, biscuits in the biscuit aisle;
and for fruit, cereal and pop in the other aisles.
Meanwhile, Granddad is working his way around, saying in a
controlled voice, "Easy, William, we won't be long . . . Easy, boy."
Another outburst, and she hears the granddad calmly say, "It's
okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here.
Hang in there, boy".
At the checkout, the little terror is throwing items out of
the cart, and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, "William, William,
relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes; stay
cool, William."
Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather
is loading his groceries and the boy into the car.
She said to the elderly gentleman, "It's none of my business,
but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole
time, you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got,
you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky
to have you as his grandpa."
"Thanks," said the grandfather, "but I'm William . . .
The little brats name is Kevin."

Bummer. I half hoped my last trip to the coop would produce another egg or two, but no luck. I picked up Martha and Pip twice and plopped them into the nest boxes, gave them a stern talking to, and left. They came right out the run without heeding my words. Bad chickens.

My poor girls yelled at me all day long and held out the eggs totally. I have gotten no less than 7 eggs a day from 9 girls for 10 days now, and the day I close up their favorite nesting spot and force them to use the designated ones, we only got 6. I hope we get more tomorrow!!

My favorite layers held out too...Martha (blue egg), Princess (olive egg), and Pip (copper/maroon egg)

Did you keep them locked up in the run, or do you now get to search the trees for eggs?

Ha! That's a great one.

They were let out at 5pm and locked back up at 7. During that time I was outside almost the whole time and there were no stray egg laying opportunities. My girls still seem to take forever to lay, I don't think any of them could have slipped off for just 5 minutes and layed an egg, but I still scoured the yard after I had been inside and found nothing. Whew!

I am trying to find out WHO IS going to the sale and what time so I will know what coops will be unguarded and when. Come on folks I really need this info so I can start plotting my route. Somebody PM me the secret info!!!

So I am planning to go to the auction tomorrow. I have on very good authority that a certain dish mat thief will be extremely close to the Enumclaw Auction barn in the morning.

So for those of you that would like to meet up with a real live Chicken Rustler tomorrow, just plan on coming out to the auction by about 11am.

For those of you that need to bring some chickens to sell, you will need to have them there between about 8:30am and 10:30am. What ever you bring the chicken in will be sold with the chicken. It is best to have the chicken in a box. Liquor boxes are a very sturdy boxes, that work well at the auction. They do stack boxes 3 to 5 high.

I am hoping to get to the auction by about 9am. There is a cafe at the auction barn, but I know of another restaurant that serves up breakfasts that one order will feed 2 or 3 people. The restaurant isn't very far, and is locate in downtown Enumclaw. We can also consider ordering to go, and dropping by my house here in town to eat if anyone wants to. I have both coffee and tea.

Rain: I am going to need to pick you up tomorrow? and where at?

So come if you want to meet up with "The ChickenRustler" and his lovely DW.

Well, it only took me one evening testing coop lighting at dusk to discover that 2 of my 3 chickens really are dumb enough to get locked out of the coop if there is a coop light on. Drama and Rhodie seemed to think it was light in the coop - surely they should be under the coop (in the dark) eating. The automatic pop-door closed. Even with it's 2nd "just in case" open/close sequence, those two weren't smart enough to get back up into the coop.

Bummer! It looks like I am going to have to drag my hiney out of bed early in the morning to turn the coop light on. Getting wired lighting, on a timer, is quickly becoming a priority.
