It was such a great day and is always such a great breath of fresh air to be able to chat with folks who understand the mentally crazy poultry peeps & quackers!! :gig

Oh ya and CR......... really!!!? Next time if ya want the cute blonde waitress's phone number... JUST ASK FOR IT!!!! You don't have to steal her whole phone!!! :lau

Uh oh!!! I think CR is almost home now!!!! I better be on my best behavior!!! I have went all this time without ever letting him know where I live and now my plan is all ruined!!! ;)

Oh my! I just had my first REAL scare with thinking I'd lost a bird this evening! I just went out to shut the run and when I did a head count in the coop there were only 10 birds. Gulp. I have 11. It took me a good while to figure out who was missing and it was my dear sweet favorite girl Ethel. I went to the run...no bird. Called and called her, heard a rustling in the bushes/tree nearby so I ran in the house to grab a bright flashlight. Came back out and searched high and low in the bush and around the run and what did I find? Ethel on the roost in the run. I think she ran in there in the *almost* dark when I went to get a flashlight and got disoriented and couldn't make it to the coop. I grabbed her so tight and snuggled her and could tell she'd been running. I just wonder why she wasn't with her flock! Glad they're all safe and sound in the coop now, whew!!!!

Hi guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
frow.gif

Doing good here, getting kinda better.still swollen & the knee is very, very wobbly, scarey wobbly.
I do believe I have finally completely torn the mesial quadracepts, the muscle that attaches on the inner side of the knee where your knees touch together?

The big band of ligaments there hold the lower leg UNDER the femur where it is supposed to stay.
Three times I have torn it......and I could feel the dental-floss like ligaments ripping when I fell...........so, maybe have to have a surgery to reattach the thing

Hope not !
Doc says I need a better bigger brace also (think Forrest Gump here) I envisioned a metal brace from crotch to ankle...............

Whatever, it will have to waite until after the first of the year so I can sign up for a Medicare supplimental Insurance policy...that is if we have Medicare anymore............

I do have a couple of "Full leg" braces if they will help!!!

Maybe I missed an answer so excuse me for asking again, but I'm wondering when everyone sets their coop light timers for in the winter?

At the risk of starting a debate...

I don't use artificial light in winter. Nor do I heat my coop. I still had decent egg production from the girls who started to lay in late fall.
I do not plan to use lights this year either.
I only set lights in the coop the first year I had chickens. Now I just let nature do its thing. Gives my girls a rest.

I set my timer to come on at 4:00am but I didn't set one to stay on after dark. You want your flock to come in at dusk and be able to get up on the roost before dark. if they are on the floor at night and the light gos out, they will probably be on the floor all night! their night vision isn't very good!

They do live around here; they live in evergreen or deciduous forests and tend to be in areas with low human activity. How big was it? I'm glad your girls are safe!

Gosh, it looked pretty big, but not as big as I imagined a hawk to be. That's not saying much - I have no idea how big a hawk is supposed to be. You read about huge wing spans, but I wasn't at an angle to see how large the wing span was. Body size - maybe about the roundness of my chickens. I'm not sure, it could have been bigger, it was flying pretty fast. I wonder if it attempted to pick up my Light Brahma and discovered that she was a 7+ lb. heavy lump of chicken. There are white feathers all over the yard. She seems to be OK though.

I saw the bird fly up through the yard from ground level. My husband saw it on the roof, before it flew back over to the cliff. There are hundreds of evergreen trees that grow on the cliff.
