Thanks so much, I will go get that stuff right now!

I can't remember who just asked if I was the one that just lost the 11 hens, but to your question YES that was me too! I have some of my stuff together already to start building me a huge run for the girls and boys to be in for the first half of the day and then I will let them out for the last half of the day. All this seems to be happening in the morning just before or right as the sun comes up. I may be eatin me some cyote stue some time soon if any one wants to join me LOL (just kidding).

Off I go to the feed store, later everyone.

I feel so bad for you and your flock. I'm so sorry!

Now I need to find some eggs to hatch! I did see Rare Feather Farms had some she was selling....And I just happen to be going over there this weekend to pick up a pair of cochins! Not sure if I can wait to get eggs from them.

OK well I'm off for the morning at least. We're heading out to the park (I have to push the little ones in the SINGLE stroller while JOhn rides his bike) for our Exploration Day. Every Wednesday we don't do "real" school, just our science experiments for the week, read our science and math books, math activities, and enjoy creation together. Gotta love our curriculum! Have a great day everyone! I'm realllly hoping to find our first egg from the new EE today, she didn't lay yesterday, nor did my blue egg laying EE; our basket was kinda ugly ;)

Are you doing MFW for your curriculum?

Yes! We love it so much! How did you guess? Have you used it?

Quote: I've done the same thing. No chicken math here. lol

I was limited to 5, till this year. Now the limit is 8. I always kept my flock to 2-5 hens. Neighbors like my chickens and wouldn't care if I got more. (They even told me roosters would be OK with them) But I also like my yard and I'm concerned that having 8 or more would destroy my yard, and make it unlivable. Also 5 or less are so easy & cheap to care for.

Here's a quick link to the chicks Wilco has available and some little articles of information about winter laying, raising chicks, etc.

I am tempted by those laced Wyandottes... but there's no room here!

Oh no!!! I just subscribed to them!! Lol. They have a few breeds right now that I want! What to do what to do!?!

Chickens are a drug I tell ya......the ones you start with are never enough!!! Bwahahahahaha!!

...so I'm stuck on the 'breeds' section, adding breed after breed to my 'want' list... at this rate I'm going to need a farm much sooner than I thought LOL

How many birds does one usually keep to a flock (assuming they are cooped/run not free range) - I've been reading that if the flocks get too large you may have 'pecking order' issues and it would be best to segregate the birds in to smaller, more manageable flocks. And do any of you do that (have more than one coop/run to separate your birds)? Does anyone do that to keep breeds separate so you don't end up with 'mixed' breed eggs (assuming you have roos and hatch your own chicks)?
I remember the days when I wanted every pretty chicken that caught my eye. I still find myself wishing I had room for more breeds.

I have two flocks in separate runs. They free range on alternate days when I'm hatching and selling chicks. One thing to remember is that a rooster can only service a certain number of hens regularly. From my reading, it seems most breeders only have half a dozen hens or fewer for each rooster, so they can guarantee good fertility. I would think, I am just guessing, that crowding would be more of an issue than numbers. If I were the bird on the bottom of the pecking order, I might feel differently.

For those of you that homeschool, and the conversation about books/libraries.

This morning I bought some wormer for the cats from Amazon.com

As I was checking out I saw link for textbook rental from Amazon. I did not look at it. But thought I'd throw it out, if anyone is interested to research it. I have no idea if it would be helpful.

And finally:

The person that adopted my Buff Orpington cockeral is interested in getting some BO POL pullets or hens.

If anyone knows any resource for these, it would be appreciated.
