Have you heard of Washington Virtual Academy? It is public home school. It is paid for by the public school system. The child has a teacher assigned to him or her. The child is home schooled by the parent, but a school teacher is involved to make sure the child stays up to standard. The parent can then supplement other activities as they choose.

If we can't get our our oldest son waiver-ed to a different middle school next year, we'll use WAVA until we can either move, or get a waiver in place. The middle school he is designated to go to is the toughest middle school in our city. It is notorious for it's gangs. We won't deal with that school at all. Our little guy wouldn't be able to handle it. He'd be teased mercilessly, and wouldn't understand to not accept being treated badly.

If we do end up having to do WAVA, we'll supplement his activities with a heavy emphasis on robotics, computers, aerospace, film-making, etc as those are his strengths. He's a big-time science and artsy kid.
I looked into CVA, Ive heard of WAVA but never looked into it. We were going to sign up for the academy this year since its the first year we have to be "official" But decided against it at the last minute.
I havent ruled it out though. We will see how this year goes with this different approach. Im pretty sure that I will look into those options for higher grades though.

Yep, I have the k12 site.

I just sent WAVA a text. Our school district used to be on the list. Now I can't find it.

I hope we still have that option for next year!

Also note that www.k12.com and www.k12.wa.us sites are two different sites and completely different entities. The latter is for OSPI. It is the most important one to be familiar with as they drive the state education standards. K12, on the other hand, is an educational system that is purchased by the school districts as a home school option.

I LOVE my auto door. DH griped and moaned about the $$$ when I bought it when we were building our first coop. He had to tell EVERYONE how much money I was spending, how ridiculous I was being, how he couldn't understand why I needed this automatic door, yadda yadda. Since then, I haven't heard one single complaint from him. (Of course, I had a lifetime's worth of grief until he was able to witness the value firsthand). We know that if we go out and don't make it home before the sun goes down that the girls are safely on their roosts in the coop and the door is closed. I haven't even changed the battery in the 1 1/2 years since we installed it, though I'm probably due. Ours is the Foy's Auto Solar door, so it opens when the sun comes up and closes after the girls are in the coop. I don't have to worry about adjusting any timer.

If you are clever, there are auto door components you can purchase and rig that are about 1/2 what I spent. DH and I are not that clever. Typically if anything needs to be assembled, I'm the one who does it because I'm just a little more mechanically inclined than he is, but that's mostly because I will take time to read instructions.

Girl, you haven't read about poop boards yet? Oh, you've got to get on the poop board train! All the cool kids are doing it!

A poop board sits underneath your roosts. You can put a lip on the edge of the board and fill it with sand or shavings. OR, you can put some kind of box, low lipped container on your poop board. My girls typically just use the coop for sleeping or laying eggs, so most of the poop in the coop is occurring during the night when they're roosting. The board contains their droppings in one place, so it's a simple matter of scooping or scraping the deposits from the board to keep the coop relatively clean. I'll bet some folks would be willing to share photos of their boards if they have any.

Here is mine when we first set it up. Those were large kitty litter boxes with an inch of sand inside. Every few days, using a kitty litter scoop, I would sift and scoop out the poop, periodically changing out the sand. Eventually I found the large cat boxes too cumbersome so now just sprinkle sand or shavings on the board itself. I'm still looking for the right sized boot tray or cage tray to fit that board. It's about 2X4 ft. I also realized quickly that I did not want to keep the food and water inside my coop. Personal choice.

Hi Everyone: We are considering a move to Everette area for Being. Can anyone tell me where is the best area to buy with some land that is resonable, so we can bring our chickens and grow our flock?

Despite resetting my subs to "daily digest" it goes right back to "site only" so....I am getting NO e-mail notifications if I have any PMs, not any action on any threads I subscribe to.
Makes selling or auctioning a nightmare too.

Just wanted to say:

I have maybe 25-30 Pullets & hens at POL from age 6 mo to 1 year old that are for sale at $15 to $20 each.
The breeds include:
Black javas
EE (Orloff X Ameraucana)
OEs (Cuckoo Marans X Ameraucana)
also assorted Cockerels of the same breeds.........the Orloff X Ameraucana cockerels are just stunning !
Cockerels $2 to $5
Gotta thin the flocks yet again due to crashing my knee again.................

More lovely updates:
We have been smelling dead animal every so often...getting very bad daily.
Smell is behind the building site & uphill so I have not been able to go see what it is................DH went up there this morning, the smell is so bad we are gagging in the cabin as the wind blows this way (of course !!!)

And it is a dead adult deer..............crud !
Must have been hit by a car & wandered up here to die.
The thing is full flyblown & so gross we cannot drag it out of here now....DH says it is FULL of maggots !

So now we just have to let it rot & waite til it is done "cooking" before we haul off the skin/bones.

Also had my double MRI yesterday A.M.
One for the knee (3 tests took 20 minutes) and then another for the quadracepts (7 tests took 45 minutes)
Boy was I tired of listening to that dang machine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had a bad dream last night that there was thumping bumping pounding whineing going on coming from the fan in the window...making MRI noise & was trying to yell at DH to shut it off......it was just a dream but so real !

I really can live with out the dead animal stink !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Boeing ?
I am far south but there is many here that are from that area.
Maybe look into classifieds or ask a Realtor in that area or north up to Granit Falls area ?

Welcome to Western Washington and BYC!
I'm not in that area either but others here will have ideas for you. What kinds of chickens do you have?

Marysville, Snohomish, Mill Creek, and Lake Stevens are all nice areas, close to Boeing.

A little further out - Granite Falls, Arlington, Monroe.

Even further - but nice - Sultan, Duvall, Stanwood.

The further North & East you go - the less expensive and larger your property will be.

Good luck!

CL: So sorry to hear about your knee! I hope it gets better quickly!!!
A dead deer is bad enough when it's just along the road, but to have it rotting right there..... Oh My! Would a flock of scavenger birds be helpful??

I sure wish I could buy a couple of your hens! I only have 3 and so often find myself buying eggs for one reason or another (molting, broody, age). If only I'd known about chicken math before we built our little coop!! Even though I think it could handle one more I'm finding that adding a single bird is awfully hard on the bird. I'll probably be replacing one of the girls next year. Maybe then I can get two and manage it better that way.

Does anyone know if there are any bantams that consistently lay "large" eggs?
