Just thought I'd share an updated egg color wheel. My Olive Egger (Marans/EEx) hasn't laid in days though, so this is missing her dark olive green egg. I love my eggs!

Teehee, thought you might like that. Who cares what we do with our (chickens') poo anyway, right?! I need it gone and don't want to fill my trash can. As soon as we've had a few days of rain and then get another break, I'll be burning me up some poo and litter. I have no time, energy, or strength needed to use it in a productive manner right now, and this will kill off all the nasties in it.

I probably missed something along the way, but I got an idea from someone else on BYC for easy disposal of poo. So I cut some holes in the bottom of an old trash can and all the poo goes in there. I throw in straw, dry leaves, and other stuff that doesn't go to the chickens. After about 9 months or so it's nice pretty compost/dirt. Just yesterday I dumped my first one out. I let it get dry this summer so the top half hadn't decomposed. The bottom half was wonderful compost. The dry stuff I just put back into the bottom and wet it down. Love It! It's nice, neat, and easy and never got smelly. So much better than what I was doing before.

Never mind, I now have something else to deal with. One of the new buckeyes has a respiratory infection. Thank you for the offer, but I need to deal with this before any more birds come in the house.

No worries, I understand! I heard a beginning crow attempt this morning, so I should know soon who the boys are that will need to go bye-bye. If I have an extra pullet, I will check in with you again later to see if you're still interested.

Hope the Buckeye recovers quickly.
Thank you for the offer! I ended up returning all the birds. It was hard to do, but I felt I wasn't up to the task yet.

In rare good news, I googled feather sexing again and took a second look at Gimp. Turns out it's Gimpette! In more bad news, the hobble did not work. I left it on for I think 3 days? Still just as gimpy. I took it off and put her with the other chicks and she is so much happier. She can zoom around even with the bad leg.

I am considering going to the Baxter Barn in Fall City and looking at their chicks. Anyone have an opinion on Baxter Barn? They have speckled Sussex and salmon Faverolles. I doubt they will be very pretty birds, but who knows. At this point I just want to round out the flock and get it done.

Jen just MHO but, I wouldn't add any more at this point, when you add birds from unknown sources, or known, as you have found out, they can have issues and obviously not be healthy, in the future, it is a wise thing to keep a closed flock and if you bring anything in, you have a separate quarantine area, well away from you original flock, you keep them separate not mixing food or water containers, and make sure you disinfect them as well. As you have found out, people are not always honest, and it could have been worse, and then you have exposed your other chicks.
Call it a lesson learned. Fall is not the best time to buy chicks, especially if it starts getting cold. I know that you have already bought some, and that's great, but, it doesn't take much to integrate chickens, at least in my experience, so why not wait till the spring, and give you self time to research more and find a reputable breeder.

Again, just my humble opinion, and things I have learned over the last three years.
