yep that's what I would do, the only time I've had them rock is when they were getting ready to hatch, also, I know you said you may not be hatching anything any time soon, but here is a picture of what I use to candle, I got the idea from another forum member, I have all brown egg layers and you can see pretty well as long as you are in a darker room

I got all this stuff at lowes, I think it was about 20 bucks or so, that's a rubber washer, and a pvc fitting, dang it, I don't have the sizes!! I thought I wrote it down!!

anyway FWIW.

They can't hatch yet! I'm not ready!

And I always said I'd never get myself in position of not being ready for a new chicken ever again. Will someone

some sense into me? I have to finish building the brooder before they hatch and finish building the 2nd coop/run. I'm gonna be busy for a few weeks! As soon as they are able to be off lights we want them to go into their new outdoor coop/run.

According to the Mini Advanced LED readout, I'm supposed to be on "Day 4" meaning 4 days away from hatching. But, 4 out of 5 eggs are rocking periodically. I hope that Mini Eco stabilizes FAST.

I'll have my husband look at those and see if he can figure out how to build a better candler. I've been using a small flashlight with 9 LED lights in it with a toilet paper tube duct-taped around it. Works great for the white egg. At least we had the white egg. That one got handled the most so the kids could see the development. We probably candled that one 5 or 6 times. I hope we didn't handle it too much.

well, I better get, I bought a few different garlics to plant, gotta get the bed ready, thats gonna take a while!

and I was a grocery outlet and found some bulbs super cheap to plant! I am not a flower person, but, I have these two half oak barrels right outside my front door and I thought I would put something in them to come up next spring!!
just got to keep my cats from lounging in them!!
plus I'm freezing!! Kay peeps, take care!
Oh plus I better get started on my apple butter!! yea!!
Thank you CL for getting me started on the idea!! ( she makes some good stuff)! I can only hope mine turns out as well as yours!!

Yes, I have contacted her, just waiting to hear back from her. When we picked them up, she told us that it's not a big deal, that it was just like a "common cold" and that all goats get it and that now that they've had it as babies, they'll be more immune to it later on.
I have a goat book, but it doesn't talk about a cold, just all the different diseases and bloat so, while the book has been a big help in many different areas, it's not givin me much for this particular situation. That's why I turned to you guys and I'm also goggling some stuff now too. I like to dip in to as many different resources as possible so I have more then one opinion, option and/or outcome to go off of.
Thanks anyway CR!!

One big reason why I don't and probably won't ever show! The goat show people I've talked to all say it's a very common occurrence to get runny eyes and nose when going to those places. I personally wouldn't have let you take them home till they were better, but, yea, that's just me. You need to know what kind of infection it is before you get antibiotics so, if you can get the name from the breeder and get some, he just may need another round, usually it takes a bit more than one shot, but, if the other one is fine, then this little guy's immune system may just be a bit lower. I would talk to the person you got them from, they would know better than anyone, and if they are reputable, and decent they should help you get him back on track.

CR you used to show!! You know how that goes!!! But, I must say, it's NOT common in a closed herd. I have had no colds, or respiratory infections or anything in the almost two years I've had my goats.
I'm sure it'll be fine.

Ok, thanks for this. Someone recommended an antibiotic called LA-200, I called a large animal clinic and they said to go ahead and try it but if he's not better by Friday, take him in Saturday (they are closed Friday). Fingers crossed please!!! I really don't wanna vet bill!! Vet bills always cause DH to second guess my critter obsession.

Gnawing in a wall would drive me nuts !
I would sleep elsewhere !!!!!!!!!
It is also very dangerous, rats & mice love to chew the insulation of electrical wires.....and can short themselves out on it, and start a fire !!!!!!!!!!

           Me thinks you need an exterminator, pronto !

You know one that works for free?

After further inspection, the gnawing is taking place in the ductwork (unused: we've been heating with oil-filled radient heaters for over a decade: the first winter our heating bill went down 50%). I've been slowly filling it in with expando foam, anyway, so today I'll get the part under the bedroom floor. If I had a construction budget, or anyone in shape to go under the house, I'd have pulled all the ducts years ago and made insulated plates over the air gaps; as it is, I have to intentionally and consciously go about things the wrong way, because the right way is out of reach.

Stupid reality.

That's exactly where I was a year ago; I thought I had another day to get the brooder tub together, and then YOWZA: chickies!

Wow, I have got to get out more.
There were 2 fires in Rochester, holy moley batman.
One was a brush fire at 180th and Alban place, spitting distance from my place. Westward. Might have been set by kids, Sheriff's Dept is investigating.

The other was a large storage of logs waiting to be turned into "bark". Apparently all is under control at this location. The pics of the this fire are terriffic and horiffic at the same time.

Usually the big news around here was when a juvi that was incarcerated escaped and they were searching. That facility is now closed and the juvi/s are held elsewhere. They built this facility because there was a "great need" to house offenders that would be "at risk" in the "normal" facilities. Since the dumba**** (elected officials) over spent (as usual) the income of the state they of course deemed this facility as not being really needed. They lie so much they put rugs to shame.
