That is great news!

My young girls are sad and confused when it comes to rain. They're used to warm sunny days when they can run around out of the pen for hours. Now, they venture out from under the covered area for a few seconds and skitter back. I tried to let them out for about an hour and a half today but two red-tailed hawks appeared and I had to rain on the girls' parade...
They got some nice grainy/seedy bread, apples and scratch to compensate, but I still felt sorry for them. Still, I'd rather we get rain for at least a week. At least we humans get a break from yard work.

We had a somewhat similar experience. Our hens spent much of the day under the deck on the side of the house, staying out of the wind.

speaking of rain, it started here yesterday, a nice steady drizzle. My girls couldn't wait to get out and about in the rain. They stayed out most of the day. (they're out usually by 2:30)
Today they were very noisy wanting out to search for the creepy treats they love. ugh. But the spider population is down.

Now I have a RIR that may be going broody on me? She likes to stay on the nest (this is the head hen that put my Blue Knight in his place) Well today went to gather the eggs and she was on the nest and making mean sounds when approached. The Blue Knight was also in the coop guarding her? I don't have any ref for this action as I never had chickens b4 but I thought it was amusing.
Gave her another hr, then moved her off the nest and gathered the 5 eggs she was sitting on.

So far none of the eggs are fertile but I imagine it will be just a matter of time as BK gets older.

Mother Clucker, Emily Chickenson and Atilla the Hen are looking for a good home!

I am moving and can't keep them.

The chickens are yours if you can transport them.
The coop is also yours if you'd like it. With a few tools, strong men and a truck it can be moved.

ALSO FREE: water container, feeder, half bag of organic feed, hay

Chickens are 13 weeks old, not yet laying. Breeds: Plymouth Rock, Ameraucana, golden laced wyandotte (they'll each give you a different color egg!)
Email me!

So this week I'm taking care of my friend's chickens while she's on vacation. I've always had a hard time with her setup. The chickens are properly sheltered and fed, but their area isn't clean by a long shot. She considers them "just chickens" and not pets, they aren't socialized or even anywhere near tame (which isn't my issue). The mess was pretty awful. Backstory: She's been married for 12 years, tried to have kids for 7 of those and finally adopted a baby girl, then a baby boy; then God granted her a pregnancy! She is 9 weeks along and terribly morning sick, so the chickens are neglected. She even went so far as to apologize for their conditions before I went over there because she's so sick she knows she isn't doing what's needed. They had food and fairly fresh water though. There were 7 eggs in the coop. 3 on the ground because some of the chickens don't lay in the nests, and those were all completely caked in poop. 4 more in the nests which also had a lot of poop in them. The birds have roosts which I know they use, so I have no idea why the nests were so foul. My plan is to head over there tomorrow and muck out her whole coop and run and replace bedding (which I bought myself today at the feed store) in the name of "I wanted to help because I know you're terribly sick from being pregnant" instead of "I think the conditions your chickens live in are too dirty for words." Would you do the same? I know how she takes care of them and which things she prefers, so I think it will be a real favor for her to have fresh pine shavings in the coop and scoop out the run as well. I just don't want it to come across wrong. If you were throwing up and sick all day, would you appreciate it if someone did that for your chickens??

Hey all. Not sure if this is the best place for the post but, I am a high school science teacher. I have 2 students who are doing an Independent Study class with me and they are looking to see if they can raise chickens from eggs.

My usual science supplies supplier wants an arm and a leg for a dozen viable eggs and they will want even more to ship them from the east coast.

I am looking for probably a dozen viable/fertilized eggs. Doesn't matter what breed they are.

Thanks

May I ask where you are?

I can't help you but I can guarantee you there are those here who can. If you can be patient through this weekend for an answer, I think someone will likely contact you. There is a poultry show in Salem and many of the frequenters of this forum are there and won't be replying here until Monday-ish. Chickens are a great science project as long as someone is committed to learning what they need to know to provide adequate care for their birds, so I think you've come to the right place! One of our members is hatching her very first incubated set of eggs this weekend as well, so I'm sure there will be updates. Welcome to Backyard Chickens!!
