Hi, Rainplace.
I'm in East Bremerton near the Fairgrounds. I am right near the freeway so Silverdale or Poulsbo would be closer to me than S. Kitsap.
Do you know of a local source of food grade DE? Farmland in Silverdale said that they don't get "involved" with DE. Some of the Poultry people at the Fair a few weeks ago swore by the Sevin dust which you can find at Walmart but the precautions on the label were a bit frightening.
Do you know if Bay Hay & Feed carries it?

Slugs ~ my chickens are hysterical to watch when I toss a few slugs in their run. They chase each other and play keep away. Then of course watching them afterwards wipe their beaks on the ground to scrape of the slug slime is funny too.

I wish I could fence my yard in so they could free range, but I'm so scared either they'll take off or something will get em.

my chickens don't seem to like slugs. I threw one in their run once and they did chase each other around for it and such but then just left it be. Maybe they couldn't figure out how to tear it up...

Calling all Western WA chicken peeps-
If anyone recalls the story of Buffy the brave girl who recently passed from internal laying, you will know that I have been grieving the loss of my beloved pet.

I'm ready to move on, and my other two girls need another flock member. I'm looking for a chick to hand raise so It will bond with us. My other two black stars aren't nearly as friendly as Buffy was. I don't care what breed, but I would prefer if someone could sex it. If we get a chick that turns to roo, I have friends that will home it later, and I'll start again.

My point is- DOES ANYONE NEAR OLYMPIA HAVE A CHICK THAT I CAN BUY? I would be eternally grateful.

To answer a few questions ahead of time- I don't want to wait till spring to buy from the feed store because I'm gone alot that time of year. Fall is much better for the attention I want to provide. I don't want to order online because I only want one. Online chicks are like potato chips- you can't have just one

Thank you all in advance...

If you haven't found a chick yet, my local feed store just got in about 300 chicks on Friday. He has several breeds, I think they are listed in a post on this thread about last Friday. If you can't find a chick closer, I would be happy to get one for you and meet you in Yelm on one of my trips through there. Let me know.

I think he has Buff Orpingtons. Was that what Buffy was?

I went and adopted a goose from Kitsap Humane Society today. They have what I think is a bantam polish rooster if anyone is interested. (I don't know squat about chickens) Now that the goose is gone, the poor little guy is out there all by himself. Adoption fee is $5.

Thank you Tomato Lady!! I'm gonna try to go on Tuesday!! I appreciate the offer to bring me one, but I can't resist the urge to pick one out myself- then it'll be my fault if it's a roo, right?

I'll let you know how it works out.

Nurse ELB, the chicks at Webster Rd. Feed store are supposed to all be pullets. Of course, you and I both know that is no guarantee, but I have only gotten one roo of all the pullet chicks I have purchased from him. The other two roos I have came from a streight run batch of Polish.

P.S. Have fun picking out your chick!

Get yourself a couple Ducks to take care of your slug problem! We have two Magpie ducks. keep a bowl of water around for them to wash the slugs down. Haven't seen many slugs in the last week! might have to borrow some from the neighbor or buy some. Any idea on what shipping would be on five pounds of slugs??
