Some of you may know that I have been going through the chicken wars down here in Hoquiam. They have ruled no roosters. I am going to try to persuade them that I should be allowed to keep my existing rooster because of the benefits it has made in my life and health, and also because he was perfectly legal when I started raising him. But I need to try to make some plans for the possible outcome that they will not be sympathetic to my situation.

Named Pinky (named for the pink cable tie I used to identify him early on, and it stuck - Poor guy!)
He is a very good rooster. He herds his 12 hens very well. Helps them find food when free ranging and alerts me if anybody is out of the designated chicken area. He is no abusive to the hens and they seem to tolerate his amorous side fairly well. I will put him down if I need to, but would love to see this responsible 5 month old Black Australorp Rooster find a new flock to care for if possible. All this in the event that I need to send him away.

That is the first part of the dilemma. The other is that if he goes, I need to replace him with a permanent dog to help to manage my chickens. Pinky offers the advantages that he alerts me when hens are out and he also protects them form predators as best he can. I have Moody (Australian shepherd) that I keep half time for a friend, but he is not always there.

Moody would only tolerate a female dog. I am hoping for a younger dog because I want to be able to train them to my needs. This dog must absolutely be good with chickens, be tolerant of Moody who is not the most amiable of dogs, but has shown a different side when with a young female black lab that he knows. I think it would be best if this dog were already potty trained and didn't want to always play. It should also be short hair but cold tolerant. It also must not be a needy dog. Just friendly, helpful and a little bit independent. I have been toying with the idea of a dog for quite a while, and feel this might be a way for me to deal with the inevitable depression that will accompany having to part from Pinky.

So, if you can either offer me a possible option for Pinky, or have an idea of the breed of dog that will best interact with my chickens or me, or have just such a dog; Please let me know.

The Big Dog is disgustingly healthy and loves to bark everyday at the neighbors rather nasty and mean large (smaller than Puppy) dog. I work really hard at trying to keep the noise down because of the type of neighborhood I am in. We have had Puppy aka the Komondor since he was 9 weeks old. His 12th birthday will be February 9 2010. I thought that these dogs only lived to be about 7 to 10 years old. I can't decide if I am doing something really right or really wrong. I am going to be devastated when he dies, he is so much apart of our lives. His favorite pastime is shopping and being talked about. I think that came from showing him one year at the King County Fair. The Yorkie puppies scare him really badly, and the pups 4lbs daddy is top dog in the house. The Komondor only comes to the name of Puppy. He is still the baby of the people family. I now have had 2 Komondors out live their projected life spans.
As I am typing this he is on the sofa in the family room snoring.

I think Willow has been laying for a couple of days. I have looked, but found these 3 on the floor of the coop today when I opened it to clean. Unfortunately I dropped one while trying to clean them. I did save the egg, but sorry to have not gotten the picture first.

I just read somewhere on another thread that ducks only lay in the spring? Does that tend to be true? The ones we rescued have been laying. Nyrial gave me 6. Do they mostly breed in the spring/summer? Just thinking. You never know a couple of ducks may come home with me from the feed store in the spring.

Things like that happen all of the time, don't they? "But honey, they followed me home!"

It depends on the breed when they lay. A lot of domestic ducks are egg layers, laying more eggs than many chickens. All stop during molt, and some wind down a bit in the winter, but yeah, you can get an egg a day from a lot of them. There are seasonal layers as well, the small ones.

Speaking of which, I just put a order into metzers for two welsh harlequin ducklings to be delivered the week of dec. 14th. If anyone wants to look over the website and order a couple, let me know and I'll add it to my order.
