I worried about giving too much scratch before it got cold. Now I am happy to see that they are eating (whatever it is, it will help make calories to burn which is what they need in this weather. If someone seems to be not laying or getting fat, I will worry about that then. I have 13 counting my roo in the coop. They get scratch morning and night. Morning because I want them warm enough to get out and play a little bit. Evening, so everyone eats and his cozy warm in the hen house. I am throwing out about 3 cups each time. Some of it goes to the little birds that fly in and swoop it up. The layer mash is going down enough that I don't worry that they aren't getting enough of that. I also have an old sod couch and an old compost pile that they have been scratching and dust bathing in. There are plenty of worms in there to supplement their diet.

Ron. Congrats on all the eggs Woohoo! In answer to your questions,
I think she likely meant in 24 hours. And I don't think it will happen often, but I heard that Delawares can be very productive. As many as 320+ eggs a year if I remember right. The other thing is that even if you provide a nest each, often hens will choose to use the same one. So placement of the eggs doesn't mean anything. If you want to spread them out a little, you might try putting a golf ball in each nesting box.

My egg count today (14 days laying, by the way) 7 Brown and 1 Green. So I believe I have all but one hen laying at this point. Because I know that all of my EE's are laying, and I only have 8 brown egg layers. Yippee! By the way. I got two double yolkers again. 1 green and 1 brown. (None broken)

It is so cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to get one of those metal water heaters. Looks like the galvanized pan, only upside down. You put a metal water pan on it and it keeps it thawed.

Also going to keep one in the hen house. My goal is to have it warm enough in their that the water doesn't freeze. That is how I will know that I achieved my goal temp.

If your chickens are over 5 months or so, they can withstand a lot of cold. Tell us what types of chickens and the ages. That would help to let us know what to advise.

At the very least, I think I would find an old blanket, or some cardboard, or something like that to put between the coop and the tarp. Not sure what kind of coop you mean, but I am picturing something with a single wall, maybe a plastic wall???

OK... I just looked it up. It is the A frame with the long coop on the top, and open air pen beneath.

I would make sure there is an over abundance of bedding in it. I would also do the blanket thing. If it were mine, I would also put plastic on at least one side, and the ends if they aren't solid already. I would choose the side that gets the most weather. This will help protect them from drafts while outside too.

Thats what I thought . two eggs in 24 hours. I have a row of five nest box's. sometimes there is four eggs in a box, other times I can have a egg in every box. My girls get the corn &/or chicken scratch every morning and night in this weather. I just brought them out warm oatmeal. they gobbled that up.

I have 3 silkies, 1 EE, 1 Marans. All are 7-8 months old. They free range in my fenced yard during the day, and pretty much just use the coop to sleep in. Right now I have a tarp covering the entire coop, floor to top, but I think I will add a blanket or something like you suggested too.

My two BOs, one BR and a black australorp are over 3 mos old, and are up on their roost now, even tho there is a lamp on by the water to keep it from freezing. They were by the lamp for a bit, but jumped on roost a bit ago. I think they are doing pretty well if they have decided to forgo that lamp. I know these are hardy breeds, but still makes me worry a bit.

I gave them some scratch before it got dark and they gobbled it up.

3 month already. Time really does go fast with chickens I think. Sounds like things are cozy in the coop if they aren't focusing on the lamp. The heat will rise in any case, so the roosts are likely benefitting too. I know I saw your coop pics, but I can't remember you set up. I will take another look if I can find it.
Sounds like you are having fun with them. That is great!

The lady said they can lay two eggs in a day, but that is probably not likely to happen very often. Maybe in the spring when they really start producing every day and get lots of light. I am pretty sure the three white eggs are from three different girls. Glad your white leghorn is back on track.

I am beat tonight, I think I need to go to bed early. I went out and put plastic around the outside of my run to keep the frigid wind off of them during the day, and I put more sand in the run because since I haven't been able to let them out as much with my busy schedule, they have begun trying to dig their way out. I feel bad, but I haven't been home when they can go out. I am planning on being home this weekend so I can start my holiday baking. I can't wait to try the duck eggs Anna gave to me.

Have a great night, and I will talk to you all later!
