Time flies eh?

That is what I am thinking... if they were focusing on the lamp I would be concerned, but they jumped up to the roost. Only change I see is that they went to the far wall from the window... The lamp is on the other side of the coop from them, to keep the water from freezing.

They are pretty fun, they discovered the deck and the sliding glass door. Now they can monitor me in the house to see if I have treats.

Oh Mike a new little chicky for you and the mother hen of the roost.

For everyone going to get chicks in the spring maybe you could coordinate with other people around you and when I make a trip I can localise a smaller loop?
That way I don't have to drive to Eastern Wa. and the panicula in one weekend.
Thanx.
Mike

Mike, Congratulations! Boys are always nice. I have 4 girls and 2 boys -- all grown up and one of them a grandparent already.

I haven't been to Christina's to see the chicks since our trip, but she reports that all are eating, drinking, pooping, and growing. I want to get over to see them as soon as I can. Right now I am busy still sanding drywall. Tomorrow my son is having some pretty serious surgery so I will be at the University Hospital. Guess my DH is going to have to take care of the grandkids.

Just called the weather number and it is 15 degrees in Eatonville and it is just 9 p.m. I wonder how cold it will get here tonight. I had to unplug the light in my small coop (younger chickens, but well feathered) for a few minutes so we could thaw a short pipe in the pump house that freezes when it gets cold like this. You should have heard them complain when their lights went out. Spoiled babies. The ones in my big coop all seem to be doing fine with the weather. Hope it starts to warm up soon.

Eagle2026 - I believe we're more interested in going to your place and picking up. We live pretty far away, but find it worth the drive for them.

So you can scratch the western end of the Peninsula off your route for Spring.

Edit: also, congrats!!

I am in Lakewood, Washington. (Yes - the one in the news for losing our police officers.) I have twelve chickens that were hatched last June. Six are easter eggers and at least three of them are laying green eggs. One is laying a pink egg. Two are black sex-link, one is red sex-link, two are standard barred and one is a sweet whiteish hen of unknown breed. The six non-easter eggers are all laying various shades of brown. We converted a garden shed into a coop and built a 8 x 14' attached fenced and roofed run for the darlings. They get to free-range most days and seem to be very well-behaved. They come running up to me for treats and let me pick them up. I'm using the deep litter method and have not had to change the litter yet. Probably in January. We are using three re-purposed re-cycling bins for nest boxes. Loving my chickens!

well this morning it was 1 out at 7 am.

so tonight thanks to you guys i had the idea to use the crappy oatmeal i got at wallmart. make it really hot. mix in some crushed tumms (for calcium) then i added alot of scratch and some layer feed.

they took a few bites .... squeaked.... i think it was still hot.... then started eating it carefully....

i think i will have another dead chicken possibly in the next month, i have a freebi chicken i got in the spring that is atleast a year old and short a few feathers near the vent.... it didnt come down for the midnight snack but just stood on the roost under the heat lamp with its eyes closed.....

i kept all my chickens locked in their pen today because i think it was warmer in there. i dont think it got over 20 here today.
I live up blewett pass (east side)
tonight will be another really cold night.....

hey eagle: maybe in the spring time i could come to you if it would be more convient. i like to ski at stevens and could do a pick up after a good day of skiing sometime in april (possibly, not sure when i want to get a new flock yet.)

Weaveagarden: It doesn't look like I'm going to make it up North this weekend. I had everything set, then my dd reminded us that this was the last weekend of hunting season......Anhow, she was sick last year and couldn't go so that is the new plan for this weekend. IF

she is able to get her deer early enough on Saturday we're going to make the run up north. I'll call on Saturday if you'll p.m. me your #. I will be going up there at some point this month to see my family, but I haven't gotten everybody's schedule yet so I don't know when exactly--we're not the most organized clan walking the earth.

Mike: Congrats!!! May 5 is a great day--Dh and my's anniversary. I had to pick a date that was easy to remember, after hunting season, and before the August salmon run on the Skokomish. Nobody can say I wasn't warned.

Welcome interlakkan! This is a really fun (though sometimes obscure) thread with a lot of great people. You may want to try and read the last month or so's posts to keep from feeling lost. It really does all make sense......well, at least mostly.

Hey Mike congratulations on the new little cockerel that you are adding to the inside flock.

So what is the count on the chicks in the house?

The babies are doing really well. Everyone is thriving at this point. I still need to move them to the bathroom. But first I need to get some Styrofoam panels to insulate the skylights in the bathrooms. I will look into some extra panels for insulating the coup.

ReiMiraa; Sorry to hear of your pending loss. Sometimes chicks and chickens just up and die. It is really hard on the first time chicken owner. But it is an unfortunate part of the process of keeping chickens.

All the big girls went foraging today, but the little ones stayed in the coup. I keep thinking that I have the deep litter method going, but the top of the bedding keeps getting compacted with waste. I do know that I have too many chickens for the size of the coup. I still want the girls to be laying before making the final decision on who to keep. I want them all, but I know there isn't enough space for them all in a sub-division property.

interlaaken; Welcome to the Washington thread. Reading the last month or two of this thread will help you understand a lot about the regulars on the forum.

I am happy to hear about Michael is getting enough feed for now. Please let us know when some of us need to take a turn. I am more than willing.
That's up from 21 a little bit of go. The chickies look OK for now. The water thing is just about really watching the weather and checking multiple times a day. I know that I really need to check the water at least 3 times a day. I think that I might invest in a bigger water container. Inside the coup the water seems to stay liquid, so I am fairly sure that the girls are OK out there in the coup. Even though this is my third flock as a adult, I know it is natural to worry about a really young flock.

If anyone is interested I downloaded a bunch of photos of the puppies to my photo blog pages. The link is www.justbugged.tumblr.com We are expecting the next batch of puppies in mid January. I will add chicken pictures after the one of the puppies finds his forever home.
