Wow, I'm on my third year of chickens and hadn't heard this suggestion before. I think I need to give it a try (as soon as things warm up a wee bit).

L0rraine I think that has to be the cutest little flock tender I have seen a long time in your Avatar. Kind of a timeless pic. Could have been taken years ago.... Is it you, or a family member?

I wish I had an old pic of my son with chickens. But alas, he isn't a chicken boy, and actually isn't a boy anymore either.

4 brown eggs in the coop this am when I got everyone up for the day.... 2 chickens sitting on them, one a green egg layer, so maybe more soon. I love this part of chicken rearing a lot more than I thought. I always said it wasn't about the eggs for me. But I do love finding them. Sort of like my birthday and easter all rolled up everyday.

Weather report from Eatonville: at 7 a.m. it was 16 degrees. Up from 9 degrees yesterday a.m. I think we are having a heat wave.

I had to stop and get water at the store yesterday so I could water my flocks today (and the dogs). We have a frozen pipe problem. My DH knew he needed to thaw that little pipe in the pumphouse when I left for the hospital yesterday morning. He didn't.

He just let it sit and went without water all day.

WHAT A BABY! Now we have three pipes frozen in the pumphouse because he didn't keep the water flowing.

He is out there in the cold right now trying to thaw pipes. Do I feel sorry for him? NO! You know what I am doing while he is out in the cold.

My son's surgery went very well yesterday. The outlook is good for a full recovery.

He will be in the hospital for about 5 days and be able to eat almost everything on his 40th birthday in January.

Birds are in the yard trying to dust bathe in this cold!

It has been so cold, but my little flock seem to be doing just fine.

I wouldn't count this as fact, but late this weekend and early next week we could see a little snow.

THANKS! Dont tell anyone, but this is the most wonderful state to live in. Yep, the weather has been wild, but it is totally worth it. I looked all over for the perfect place to settle after 35 years in Houston and surrounding areas. We visited Bainbridge Island last summer of 08 and moved here a month later. NEVER LOOKED BACK!

No more hurricanes, that is all I can say!!!

Yep, I moved from Michigan. I signed up for mostly depressing with a partial chance of (bad joke here). Not this cold and snow garbage.
Sunny skies may be in my future though

Figures after I start making.. you know, friends and stuff here.

Oh know. Your not leaving us, are you?

I have totally sunny skies today, and have for a few days.... It is almost warm enough in the sun to not have on a coat....... Almost.

Funny how our perspective changes over time. It hard for them not to be pets. Maybe if a person got a whole bunch that all looked alike and didn't spend much time watching them. But what fun would that be?

By the way Ron, I am having a goooooood egg day. I will wait until later to report. How about you?

San Antonio is nice, it is sorta in the "hill country" very pretty over there. I used to ride in a town called Bandera which is sorta north of San Antonio.

Anyhoo, we had a white leghorn named "Hilda-Gard" she was "all business" like a RIR. She was personable but not "loving" or "mushy" lol...she hung around when we would have a glass of wine outside though. Her comb was so tall it tipped over and hung over one eye.

She laid a smart little white egg every day, rain or shine way into her old age.
