Yep home grown are the BEST

I will probably have to separate the ducks from the chickens That means building another run of some kind.

right now their little pool is in with the chickens and they ALL can get under the barn. the chickens sleep in side at night, the ducks sleep under the barn
I would just like to get rid of the ducks

It is that time of the year when people get chicks so back yard chickens is the place to be!

My birthday is on the 12th and the one thing I really want is easter egg or olive egg pair of pullets. Anyone here have a couple?

Don't think I'll be ordering from McMurray again.

10/27 dead within 24 hours. I'm failing to see where there is anything wrong with my set up (temps from 85 farthest from light to 95/97 directly under, depending on where I put the thermometer), no drafts, brooder is wrapped in blankets to be sure, warm water with ACV and sugar, and medicated starter. The remaining chicks are hanging out between the light and the edge, not huddled up, and not panting, so I know they're comfy.

Anyone see any other issues in that set up that I need to address?

ETA: I noticed that they were hatched the 5th, which means they arrived at day 3.. perhaps they were cutting it close on the dehydration/yolk? I mean, especially if there were some that hatched really late the 4th or really early the 5th.

Can you just run a divider in there? like up under the barn? I'm not sure what your set up looks like.. seems to me you could just take some furring strips and chicken wire and fashion something out of that, but I guess that depends on how tall the area under the barn is... get creative with cinder blocks?

Hi ChickenSal
Oh my olive eggers are a Cross Daddy is a f Black Copper Marans and moms are blue Ameraucanas . So far we have hatched out one silver yes really silver and two black, as they get older so far they look like a Ameracuana with the cheeks and everything.
Ok ok I know not the right wording but hay they are cute. With this cross the eggs should start looking like Olive colored.

Anna,

We ordered from McMurray last year and had horrendous results. I don't remember the exact numbers but our first order was around 50 chicks and I think 18 of them were DOA. We called and they sent a replacement order and I ordered a few more to get it up to their minimum 25, when we picked up that box, only one chick was peeping. We went through the box and found one other very weak and wobbly chick and brought it back from death. Called them again and asked them to just refund us. I don't think I will order from them again.

Since then we've gotten an incubator and find it much more fun to hatch the eggs ourselves!

Yeah thats what DH said we're doing from now on. I have around 35 quail eggs coming this week for our first attempt at hatching, so this should be interesting.

I'm going to see what kind of luck I have with my Cackle order next month. I'm prepared to lose a few of those though because I have quite a few turkeys in it, I've heard they don't ship well. I had good luck with them with my first chicken order last year though.
