I found the baby chicken!! I think the RIR was sitting on her in a nesting box, I thought I looked there I must have assumed she wouldn't be under another chicken!! I am so thankful to find her!! Also an update we got our first eggs last week

New to the boards and Washington.. we moved from Colorado to Fox Island WA. Left all my chickens behind with a good friend who had even more chickens than I did. Got 14 new girls last week. They look about 3-4 weeks old to me..still under the lights and in the garage..the coop and run will be finished by this weekend.. if the wind ever stops blowing!..still better than all the snow we were used to in Colorado..

That is what I do. I open the door in the morning and leave it open (with a rock) and they go in and out as they please. This morning they went out and then came right back in! They are 8 weeks old, 4 weeks old, and the little 2 week old guys are all out in that coop. The little guys (I mean girls) are not able to fly up to get over and out yet so they are inside all the time still but the other two age groups go in and out all day, even in this wind. These are my first chickens so I don't really "know" to much but they seem just fine to me.

Jessica Rabbit - sorry to hear about your roof problems and the lost baby. I had similar problems earlier in the year - was shocked to go out and find two of my duck house roofs blown off. They are big and heavy, but designed so I can lift them off to clean. I've now added heavy duty bungi cords that seem to have worked so far, but I find myself checking off and on all day. But recently I've been working on building a tall, tall duck house (duck 'palace' my husband calls it) that I can walk into, and you've made me realize that I may have to make sure the roof is really good and tight on it. Because even getting the roof on to begin with has been complicated (and I've been refusing to call on my carpenter brother for help). Heck for all I know the whole darn thing will blow over at some point

It seems there are just no end to the problems that can take the life of our fragile babies (in spite of how amazingly resilient they can seem at times). There can be a few too many heartbreaks in this keeping animals thing, but I seem to be getting a little bit tougher (otherwise I'd just have to give it up).

It does seem we are paying big time weather-wise for our lovely mild February/March.

Stayed home sick today thought that I was getting a sinus infection but now I think it was just all they hay at the horse auction yesterday! Oh well I needed the rest anyways! (slept 14 of the last 24 hours!)

So since my babies are getting HUGE now, I did a little introducing with the black lab today. It went awesome!! '

' I think he's gotten used to them since they have been in the living room, but today was the first real face to face time! Put them on towels on the floor and after sniffing them a bit the lab just laid down and let them preen him!! It was HYSTERICAL!!! My little dog preens him too! He is the cleanest lab around!! LOL!

Wish this dumb weather would move on!! It was warmer here on New Year's than it is now!! I have been dying to take the babies outside in their playpen but it hasn't been nice enough!! At this rate they won't see outside till they are fully feathered!! UGH! '

Oh and almost forgot the whole reason I was going to post today!!

I see that alot of you use sand as ground covering in you chicken pens but what do you find useful in you duck pens? I was thinking large pea gravel/small river rock with sand mixed. Also using a layer on pine chips on top.

My duck hotel is in my front yard and I am working on making it very cosmetically pleasing! The neighbors describe my yard as "home depot threw up all over". What can I say I love flowers!! This year we are doing ducky friendly flowers and pots of ducky veggies all over the place!! Someday when the weather clears!!

PLEASE PM me some pics of your duck areas if possible!

Mucho Gracias!! '
