I agree with drunkdog....take this advice all with a grain of salt. It is your decision on what would work best for you. Who knows, you may end up with a pomeranian (I have 2) or a mutt (I have 1). You will know what is right when it comes along. And I agree...training is pertinent. BTW, I think cocker spaniels are one of the #1 biters...why am I saying this...to echo drunkdog...ya' just never know what will be the right dog for you. Go out, look, visit kennels, talk to breeders and owners, visit different dogs. Good luck and let us know who/what you choose. We will all be sooooo happy for you.

I still want to talk to Zgoatlady about her pyranese...but she is out tonight.
And I am going to retire for the night, and thankyou all...and sometime in the night if RonB is watching, pleeeeeeeeeeeeese answer my afore q's....and forever Thanks for the love and hugs!!!

speaking of which, I think I might have it figured out who are roos and pullets! I think I have 2 and 2
big_smile.png
That means an extra roo for you! I should PM you in case you don't see this...

ETA: The roos have 3 rows of peas, right? There are a couple that look like they have 3 rows of peas and it's all thicker than the other 2 anyway. Plus, the tops are starting to turn pinkish.

Chow Chow ?
I have seen some in the PAWS listings a few days ago, and did not even read about them thinking they were most definetely NOT a dog to trust with birds.
I will look at their ads next time I surf.
I have found 2 ads in the Daily World, 1 is Blue Heeler Pups...$300 and the other is Pure Aussie pups (I assume aussie collie) for $450 males and $500 females...man aussie collies are the most gorgeous dogs...but much higher energy level than a Scottish Collie (Lassie) correct ?
Q: How does a Scottish collie do with all this rain ?
Seems like a Scottish Collie would stay wet so much that it could grow moss...a moving vegetable patch, probably not good for their skin ?

I have a Geman Sheppard / Chow mix and she is great with both of my flocks. She even chases off the other dogs who gwet to close to the ducklings.

Chicken Rustler:::We went up to look yesterday after the funeral, had the need to go 'sloaring and wander aimeless almost as if it was urgent to do so...by the time we got up around Mayfield it was getting on 4 PM and the wind was HOWL-LING !
So we came home, babies to tend to here.
But we are interested in Riffee.
We are serious fish freaks.
I am loving all the input for dogs and advise...and what about RonB's Kala, afraid to ask, but is she a Blue Heeler ?
4-HPultryMoM::: your babies are awesome !!!
Beautiful dogs, and they all look smart....
Are we all serious about beagles ?
But, here is the thing :
1) The dog must be able to live outside, in winter, they can board in the barn.
2) must be big, intimadating, protective, mellow (not hyper and chase birds out of 'pent up energy')
3)Smart, not needing 4 years of 24/7 training just to housebreak !
4)I am looking at at least 2 dogs, and that does not have to be the same breed, 1 'ratter' and 1 herd/flock guradian would be the best...like 1 Hungarian Kuvous, and 1 ratter-type dog...Or 1 Newfoundland
love.gif
and 1 weanie dog...ideal would be 2 Newfies to keep each other company...and a weaner to catch rats...
Keep giving me ideas everyone !

If you plan on having chicks running around, then I wouldnt sudgest a weiner dog. They love fluffy things that squeek and run... But they are awsome mousers.

Chickie ..no I dont think they are buggers in my time with the "Beardog" as we called him I found him to be headstrong at times and easily bored during training if not challenged but very obedient and hard working always....the breed is known to be somewhat flatulent and as such is a better outdside dog in my opinion than some other breeds...and as for hair, unless you are showing your bouv hair is not an issue they shed minimally and we never had an issue with "having" to cut his hair, we did bathe him regularly but like huskies too much bathing can strip the oils from the hair (fur in huskies) and reduce the water repelling qualities of it in effect reducing the dogs outdoor resistances

Hi Chickielady;

I too come from a long history of showing dogs. In fact we had the number 10 chihuahua in the nation and several best in show dogs. There are actual Black German Shepherds and they are not Belgians, although I am very familure with the Belgains. THe reason that there are not many Black GErman Shepherds in the US is that they are not desireable. The Black German Shepherds have been around for ages and they are pure bred German Shepherd Dogs. The US has tended to breed out the other color of GErman Shepherds for the dominate black and tan color. German Shepherds actually come in blue/black, all black, black and tan, red and tan, and sable, they also come in a white color but it is also undesirable in the US. Unfortuantly the US has not done well with what they have done in the German Shepherd Breed. They have all but breed out the working part of the breed for the "pretty" over angulated look of the breed. This has also resulted in many genetic problems with the breed such as elbow and hip displaysia umong other problems. Truth is many of the German Shepherds are not prey driven and a good breeder has made sure that they have dogs that are not prey driven. My German shepherd roams freely with the chickens now and does very well with them, I even allow him to be alone with them and have no worries! He is very gentle with them and takes very good care of them. There is a local man who actually takes his German Shepherd and locks them in the pen at night with the chickens so that the racoons do not break in at night. Not only does he protect the chickens and our horses and other animals but he is protective of his family as well. Its the best of both worlds. We raised Doberman Pinchers as well but I could never trust them with the chickens we had...the first chance they got they would try and kill them. By the way, were did your DH grow up? WHo knows maybe we knew eachother? I showed throughout California. There are many breeds out there that will be wonderful if I can offer any help let me know. We raise and showed several different breeds over the years and still have many great friends that are breeders....If I can help please let me know

Michelle

I have met RonB and his wonderful German Sheppard dog Kayla. She is a wonderful dog, and very sedate and deliberate about her demeanor. She is one smart dog. Ron introduce myself and DH to his dog and chickens, but hasn't introduced is wife or daughter to us. Is that a sign about what he thinks the most about?

P.S. I love Bouvier DesFlandres. I have short listed them a breeds that may follow Puppy the Komondor. The Komondor and Kuvasz are great LSG dogs, the newfoundland is a waterdog. We adopted and senior newfie, and she was a truly wonderful dog. She loved our pet Rabbit, and never bothered the chickens. But what an adult dog will do and what a pup will do are different.
Puppy had to learn the day that he went bowling for chickens that he was a very bad puppy dog. After I got done picking 6 dead polish crested chicks, it is still one of those days that I am glad that it done, and so does Puppy.

I remember growing up a friend had a newfie that she showed. She would groom that dog to being beautiful and he would go in the ring and show his heart out. IT was great. The trick to him being such a wonderful show dog? When she came out of the ring and he was done for a treat he got pop rocks and a pepsi

It was the funniest thing to watch. He loved it but ohhh did he slobber everywhere!!
