I just wanted to clear something up... I mentioned I was going to be looking for Marans, I should have been more specific, I am trying to get a flock of FBC Marans, although blues and splash are beautiful I have a strong preference towards FBC

and those of you that may have offered? lol Um, I am horrible at going back through posts trying to find things, so I was not meaning to step on toes! sorry if I did.

Oh and those turkeys in my bator are Eastern Wild Turkeys

I am having so much fun, let's just keep our fingers crossed that I don't end up with a cot in my coop lol!

lol Thats pretty much my plan with my husband. Wait and see how long it takes for him to notice. hehehe

So I think Ive figured out the right combination for Coyote deterent. lol My coop is out in the horse pasture, right next to my house. We have it wrapped with hotwire, at 6" and then again at 18", at night the horses are also turned out in the field that the coop is in. Our paint mare is not a fan of dogs that she doesnt know, and she HATES coyotes, so her and the pony do quite a nice job of running the coyotes off. When my head isnt swimming from the hit I took, then I will be burrying the fencing also. The run is alreay covered in deer netting to keep the crows, and owls out. Last night was the real test... We were surounded by coyotes on all sides last night, at about 12AM. We moved the horses in next to the coop, and those dang coyotes ran the edge of the field with 4 adults and two horses standing out in it. I'm hopeing that all this is enough deterent for them, cause I would rather not have to discharge any firearms here. I have neighbors that are too close to legally shoot anything thats bigger than a pellet gun.

I've heard that donkeys are really good to keep out coyotes also

I've considered getting one just for that

I was toying with that idea myself, but I already have a 3rd horse coming in sometime in the next week. So that is a bit out of the question. But it is a killer idea.

I do have Bev Davis lines and can put them in one pen if your want eggs from them. Not sure of the color they have been laying since last Aug and they were really nice and dark than. Let me know.
You do need to give yours a chance..

I was planning on coming, but we had an incident today with a very beloved BCM of ours dying. I have been dealing with this most of the day today

My DD is so upset.

We were really trying to come tonight but it just wasn't happening after all of the drama. Are we still invited to come to a monthly poultry group meeting?

Maybe you can set some traps om the perimeter fence ?
Jeeeze, how long will it go on being surrounded by coyotes ?
And how are YOU ???

I was using a 10# sledge to pound in big stakes to hold up the fruit trees...and wacking away when the post split and the sledge swung over and smacked me right in the left shinbone************** stars! Cusswords not even invented yet!!!!***********and DH was gone, and I was sure I had broken the bone, so crawled inside and iced, and days later still have a bone bruise and 3 weeks later it is still black, turning yellow, and my BP was 127/70 way too high for me !
But as we have seen a million times in surgery, pain makes the BP skyrocket, even simple stress like going in for a physical exam can raise the BP alot !
Hope you are OK !
I will remember that next time I pick up my post driver ! Rest, and be careful !

Oh goodness!!! That made me cringe, just like trying to remember myself getting hit...I know that had to hurt!

Geeze, I wish the sledge to the shin would have knocked me out so I would have not remembered !
Wow, a full 3 weeks ago and it still hurts to even put a sock on !
Your noggin will hurt a long time, and your brain will be sore a long time as well !
Don't go buy any new cars !!

Yes it was one from that lady, she has been with us for a few weeks now and we were so in love with her, I am so heartbroken!!

I am a little hesitant to say anything at this point because I don't know for sure what it was, but when I cleaned out that coop, there was bloody poo, I just checked on them last night and she was singing and she just went into that coop with the new ones last week. She seemed fine, I just don't get it!!! My poor daughter found her like this today and was so upset! It has been very dramatic today.

Thank you for asking and caring Zgoatlady!

I never even thought about setting traps...

I'll look into that, but knowing my luck I'd end up trapping my own mutts!

How long are the Coyotes here each night?.... I guess that all depends on witch pack is running. We have three packs that run through our property. The largest pack we have counted up to 34 at one time, in my mothers field next door to me. When the large pack runs through, they will stay about 100 yards in all directions for about 30 - 45 minutes. "We live right on a main salmon run, lots of brush and trees." The smaller packs dont stick around very long, they just pass through, and are here and gone within 5 - 10 minutes. I really dont mind the coyotes so much. I think they are cool to listen to when they hunt. But I gotta protect my girls.

I'm alive and managing. Not very well mind you, but I'm dealing with it. I tend to sleep A LOT, and I can't control it either. Thats what bothers me the most is the fact that one minute I'll be ok, then the next, I'm all but colapsing. Dr. says to just rest, stay off my feet, and watch for any confusion, loss of vission, nassea, ect... But one way or another, I HAVE to go to work in the morning. Even if I make my husband drive my gimpy butt around to the barns. The horses aren't gonna care for them selves on the count that I'm a clutz and had an accident. lol

Success!

5/7 turkeys out and 2/3 chicks with #3 pipped.

I don't think the other two turkeys are viable to be honest, one looked less developed, and one had a crack in the shell that I had to repair, but not till the end.

So because I figured those two wouldn't hatch anyway, I'm going to call this one a 100%er

Looks like we ended up with a couple of the Slate mutations. So cute
