OK I asked before I will ask again, what is a Pumpkin Hulsey as the chick on the Home Page of the Forum, I have never heard of them and looks like a chipmunk chick to me. So cute !!!
I gave my broody LT Brahma hen the 14 eggs from Zgoatlady, that will be perfect.
Oh now I see it is a Game Fowl, beautiful birds.
Almost looks like a an EE chick, doesn't it ?

LaSombra~ you can hatch some with your broody and always sell them.
The feed stores are out of chicks lately, so they should sell fast, especially if you have a good all pupose breed, I choose the EE and Ameraucana, people always want to buy those for eggs.
By people I mean the GP (general public)

Chickielady. I'd do the T posts also when you get the time. Put in as many hooks as you can along the top and few feet down
Seems like when we under estimate animals all it takes is one either very determined or very hungry animal to use something to take advantage of us.
Raccoons are very resourceful.
I'd rather have to much then to little.
When you figure out how much you got in feed before they even lay then to be wiped out once they are laying that hits you hard.
I've been blessed so far but i certainly respect what they can do.

PS. Actually the fishing pole bells wouldn't be a bad idea if it wasn't for the amount of wind we get up here.

WOW What a day! Finished the shelter for the sheep, my Barnie eggs arrived! They should be going into the bator saturday along with a batch of Wellies, then on the 18th I have another batch of Wellies and Marans going in.....lolThe entire family is getting into this.

Final count as of today 15 Pheasant, 1 Marans and 4 Ameraucanas!!! We'll see what else happens with the rest of the eggs!

~~ and I had one little cute chickie hatch!

i didn't know you were supposed to let the eggs sit for 24 hours before incubating them.. *duh* now I know! The egg that hatched was under a broody-best incubator ever! We also have 3 cute little white cochins that hatched last week--all from under various broodies..

and it looks like the first batch of duck eggs under my call duck hen should be hatching very soon too! yay!!! I had calculated them to be hatching earlier this week, but the actual incubation time must have started later than I thought. It's hard to tell when a broody duck starts to brood For Real.

at least for me it was! I took advantage of a bath time today and candled a couple eggs from her nest and there was babies movin' in them!

I had thought they weren't gonna hatch==because of my miscalculations .... yay for bad math! lol

HELP -

My BO went broody back in April and I let her ride it out. She multed through most mof May, layed 5 eggs AND IS BROODY AGAIN. I feel like I cannot just keep feeding a broody non-laying hen. I can build a cage and try breaking the Brood, but I feel like she'll be right back at it in no time flat, and I prefer my chickens easy going, like my two RIRs.

Any suggestions, or good chicken recipes

OK I am going to write it down on my white board to call you. I have 2 Faverolles that are both rather mean and very broody. For awhile I thought that Inky the black Silkie was going to do the broody thing too. She quite in favor of scrambled eggs for lunch. Saturday will mark 2 weeks since I last wormed the chickies. It's been driving me nuts 2 have to not eat the eggs. They all started to lay more. I have been getting up to 12 eggs a day. So I have been scambling them and feeding them to the dogs and hens. The crew here are getting very spoiled. Well to bad cause after Saturday them eggs are all mine again. I am going to make pickled eggs next week.

I don't think that I am going to be able to go to Nyrial's pig roast after all. The mother-in-law is sure that we all need to take the graduating daughter (plus her spouse) of mine out to dinner. OH Well she will only graduate once from the UofW, so I guess I will have to hang with the family. I am so proud of the kid. She had a hard time of getting her head on straight, after the first boyfriend. He really slowed her progress down, and messed with her head.

I know what you mean about broody hens. It is a waste of food, though they don't seem to eat a lot when they are broody. But they are still taking up space in the coop, and not producing anything. I have about 21 birds and the best egg count I have gotten has been 12. That means that nearly half of the flock are not laying. I really need to start isolating the girls and figure out who's not laying and get rid of them. That feels really mean to say.
P.S. I made a great chicken apple salad tonight.

WooHoo!!!

My girls and I built our incubator out of a large styrofoam cooler, a light from a lamp, fan and a dimmer switch. We got 7 eggs from Zgoatlady, early Monday morning and had them in the bator by about 8 a.m. Then we got 3 more from her Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoon my bulb must have shifted and was to close to the thermometer and the temp read !!105!!!

Late last night (Thursday) I decided that rather that be wasting time on cooked eggs, I decided to candle them. To my delight I was able to see developement in nearly all except one and that one could have just been had to see!!

This is our first experience not just with incubating eggs but with Chickens period.
