Well I lost my bigest Silky this morning... I went out to feed, and the poor thing looked like he got stuck under the chick pile... He wasn't quite gone, so I tried to bring him back around... I gave him 30 minutes, of attention, water, wet food, held him in my hands in the sun to warm him. All he could do was open his eyes, and gasp for breath...

After a half hour, I made the decision to let him go. I went to do it and just couldnt... So my husband being the wonderfull man that he is, tookthe chick and walked away.

He put the poor little thing out of its misery for me. What a sad way to start my morning...

Oh and to top it off. I can't find one of my two remaining silkys... She was there when I found the little roo, then followed me to the yard gate. That was the last I saw of her. Ive searched all over my 3 acres, and couldnt find the poor thing... I hope she turns back up...

Thats it I want to go back to bed, and have a redo of the start of my day.

So sorry to read o your loss. I hope you find the other one. Wednesday, we picked up 15 Cornish cross, 8 Buff Orpington cockerels and 5 Barred Rock cockerels. two of the crosses have died and one Barred Rock is hobbling on a bad leg. Even the all but a rooster of choice is bound for freezer camp, it still bothered me to have a couple die.

My wife says I am too much of a softy to be a farmer. I reminder her that we are not farmers but retired old farts trying to live off the land as best we can. Bad enough losing chicks but having an honest wife challenging my manhood ...............

Chicks have hatched

i kicked out the 2/3 broodies cos i think one was pecking the chicks and the other squished one by sitting on i (1 dead and possible another is dying.t. so the silky gets to be the mom and sit on the remaining eggs.

the buff o. broody was ticked. i threw the 2 into the big coop and she started fighting with the two bantm roos. and they were tag team fighting her. hopefully they will figure things out. i need to move momma hen and the chicks into a more secure pen and dust them all. i have severe lice problems at my coop but do not have the time to catch all and dust each one. is there a bath i can dunk each chicken in that will KILL the LICE and EGG ???

i put DE in all the dust bathing spots. i feel bad for them. its gross.

i think i have 4-5 chicks and another that i am giving 50% chance to live. i think it hatched arely and one of the broodies (before i kicked them out) crushed its egg some after it pipped because where the egg yolk is supposed to be absorbed there are a few things sticking out. i rinsed that area off with hot water and poured soem iodine on it and stuck it under my silkie broody. if its alive tomorrow anything else i should do for it? its been 'hatched since this afternoon but its feathers havent fluffed out yet. but it is alive and kicking, with its eyes shut most of the time.

its my first black chick. i am starting to see how genetics work a little.

dusted the silkie with deust to help with the lice for some reason the silkie has less lice than the chicks... does the way the silkie feather are make it harder for them to infest???
i have a few more eggs under her that are to hatch tomorrow. one of them hatched a day early and i have 2 pips. so its starting to look like somewhere around 6/19 hatch rate.....

I would have so rather hung out with you guys.

I think that my Mother in Law was mad at my daughter, and she decided that she was sick.

So she wouldn't go to the Graduation ceremony at the UofW.

Then she changed the dinner plans on us, and ordered truly bad pizza for everyone to eat at her house.

We were going to go to dinner at a restaurant, but she doesn't like any restaurants that will take reservations. Her idea of good food is KFC.

I ended up going to the store, and paying way to much for deli food to go with the meal. The woman is a pain in the rear when she gets mad like this. She is rather passive aggressive, and she would totally deny it if you ask her about it.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Mike: thanks for the web site for the computers. I got on their mailing list.

I am so sorry to hear of the losses.

Birdbrain99114: I understand the problem with having to do in the chickens. I help my DH with the meat birds, but neither one of us like to do it. I do know that over the last year I have gotten tougher about doing them in if I have to.

ReiMiraa: I have had the same problems with the notifications for BYC. They are getting caught in the spam filter and I have go there every few days and tell MSN hotmail that they aren't spam. I don't know what to tell you on the lice. I wonder if you couldn't bath them in the same lice solutions that they use for people. There must be a thread about lice control somewhere on here.

i posted this under emergency thread but also posting it here:

so i kicked out the broody and put the remaining eggs under my broody silkie

the buff orp had already crush a chick to death during the night and i 'saved' this guy in time.

i think he was pipped and hatching but not ready to get out when the hen crushed the egg open. so he hatched early.

it looks like part of it is not absorbed all the way. i took him and rinsed that with warm water and poured iodine on it. there is a little yellow and something that looks similar to chick poo sticking out of it.

i then placed it under the broody hen and hoped for the best. 50% chance i gave it. that was yesterday

today it is alive and still kicking. one eye wont open and has a little crusty to it and the other has some but will open it occasionally. it will kick and chirp when i hold it but i do not know if it can walk. it still hasn't fluffed out like its buddies did.

the stuff is still sticking out but looks a little dried. i put a few drops of water to the chicks beak and poured more iodine on it and stuck it under the broodie. she stepped on it so i moved it under her breast next to a pipped egg.

i do not think it can walk, yet.

i do not know what to do. i feel bad for it but the fact it survived the night amazed me, it wants to live (had a chick die mid hatch, in the egg, during the night).

i knew not to pull on it any thanks to reading about others similar problems but theirs never survived a day mine has....

please help!
