OK so I saw mention of the chicken swap but haven't paid attention to where it will be. Could somebody please inform me ? I have a white Silky that I am sure is roo. It is 6-7 months. Has not crowed but the feathering looks roo to me. I would love to trade for an OEGB ROO or just find the silky a home cause we don't want a silky roo.

Today I got the net from CL stretched out. It is a circle 50' across. It has about 750' of 5/8" yellow nylon rope and 157' of 3/4". The net is in strips 6' wide. I will seperate it all so I can manage to move it in smaller sections. I priced the 5/8 and it is .49 per foot.

I have 2 white pet quality male call ducks looking for a home. I would like them to go together to someone who is not a major duck collector but just wants a couple of these very quiet ornamental little ducks to grace their yard. They should be locked up at night as the owls love to snack on them.

yes, I remember Duke... I may want some olive-egger eggs or chicks next spring... I'm not sure, though. I do have the chooks to do that myself, just not sure who's mating with who and what the outcome will be. I could separate them, I suppose...

Though in the spring! My Husband agreed to me getting Ameraucanas, as long as I get him a Wheaton roo. lol He says no on a Blue Weaton, say's that he prefers the black over the blue.

To each their own. So what we are discussing is bringing home; 1 Wheaton roo, 2 Wheaton hens, 1 Blue hen, and 1 black hen. What I want to do is to try showing locally next year.

Your such an enabler!

I am getting really excited about actually DOING something with my birds. Don't get me wrong, I love my little motley flock, and my polish roo is such a doll. But they are all pet quality / Hatchery stock. They wont be going anywhere, as they are just so fun to watch! But I think the thing I am most excited about and its going to be the hardest part, working torwards the SOP. I used to breed Cockatiels, following the Australian breed standard. I highly enjoyed that experience, but it took up ALOT of room inside and what a mess! It will be nice to try with chickens who can be kept outside. lol I'm just in the planning process; researching the breed, finding breeders, talking to people, atempting to learn the basics of genetics... Plus I am planning on extending my coop and run. "My husband doesn't know yet." lol

That is the big thing, seperate pens and coops...and raising the good ones and culling, or tossing the "eating egg quality" birds in the appropriate coop.
It can take years to raise a flock and get them just perfect.
I am in awe of how many years some people have worked on certain breeds.
I am partial to Golden Cuckoos, Blue Marans and Blue Ameraucanas, and the OEs lead by Mr Duke.

I do not know of anyone raising OEGBs here so Chicken Rustler can get another roo~~~

I have another question for all you Washingtonians.

We are still planning on moving to Washington this spring. The properties we are looking at are around the town of Ford, North of Colville and most of the properties are between the Colville Indian Reservation and Canada.

What type of weather can we expect at the end of April beginning of May?

Thanks Michael

Cheryl, planning and sitting still and waiting is the hardest part !
At least for me !
When you are ready let me know, and there is alot of great people close by that will have awesome baby chicks and hatching eggs in the spring, which is only about 5 months away !!!

All my birds continue to be absolutely healthy, zipping around, crowing, eating and happy !
DH is adding bleach 1 cup (5%) per 300 gallons in our water tanks.
WE have 8 tanks...that collect rain water and I tease him that he will have to dump all the water soon or they will freeze.
They froze last year SOLID and did not crack, made from that white thick plastic.
We get these tanks free right down the road at a chemical plant.
They are used to haul phosphate cleaner in (soap scum remover) and we wash them out with scalding hot water at the car wash...and we do not drink this water like I said, but I guess you could if you bleached the water.
I use it for laundry, showers, toilet, and animals and garden.
Anyone want some of these tanks, let me know, I will take a photo if you want, they are 300 gallons, encased in an aluminum 'cage' and we fit 2 in our little trailer or in a pickup, they are very very lightweight.
It is going to be a beautiful day !!

Have you posted this on the Eastern Washington thread ?
They are sticking to their side of the thread lately..or PM Rarefeathers maybe ?
When I was in that area, I can say it was alot of snow, dry cold in January about 10 to 20 below is not unusal, some bir rain/thundery spring and fall storms, and dry and hot in the summer.
It is kind of typical northern high desert weather.
You can pick a town and google that town and get info that way, may help ?

The main reason I am starting all this now is that I would like to find started birds. I really hate waiting that LONG wait for eggs. lol But if it comes down to it and I can't find decent pre-started birds, then I will find some quality chicks to start with. What I am planning on doing is letting the hens raise there own. My goal is to get as close to the SOP without loosing natural instincts. But I want to do it small scale, so I wont be incubating eggs. And I am also thinking that I will keep the AM's as a closed flock. At least for the first year. I will grow out any chicks that hatch, until they are 4-6 months, then choose who stays and who goes.

In your experience how quikly do your Ameraucanas mature? Would 4-6 months be old enough to choose the best of hatch? I want to make sure I keep them long enough to be able to choose the best birds to keep. But I don't want to hold onto the extras for longer than I have too... "Does that make sence?"

Ive got so many ideas in my head, and its nice to be able to come back and re-read all of this. lol I gotta figure out a better way of keeping track of all the ideas. lol
