JB.
I don't think I would be so grumpy about this except that we had a furnace and heat pump installed just over 2 years ago

There is nothing like wood heat.
Steady heat, not the draft feeling heat that you get with off and on heat where your body rarely warms up.
We've been heating with wood only now last 18 years and never will go back.
I love not worrying about what the temp is or how much it's going to cost.
Been getting my wood for free from Craigslist and other people who know we heat with wood.
Haven't paid for wood in about ten years.

At the link you will find an unbelievable price on their top stove.
They have two other smaller ones also at great prices.

As you know I just started up with chickens again so last time I plucked was erm.. yikes 20 years ago?? oy I'm getting old

Sort of the same here. I'm also the culler, but then again I'm also the feeder, breeder, hatcher, seller, etc. But, for the rest of the family, what happens happens. I'm just not allowed to cull or sell something they love. Which, we usually agree on things anyway. I just point more out (Such as a hen or cock that doesn't fit to the Standard of Perfection)

Heck I even name my cull roosters. They're often VERY beautiful too, but, everyone dies at some point.

~~Heather~~ I just wanted to say I feel your pain with lack of space and coops! So frustrating at times. I hope you find someone for your beautiful birds. Hey.. I heard something about white calls... teeheee!

We just did our first batch of roosters a week or so ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I knew that if we are going to move forward with breeding and working on several breeds, it would need to be done. And I'm addicted to hatching, and so it goes. DH and I worked as a team. Wasn't so bad skinning them.

The kids mentally are torn, they KNOW the birds lived a good life and a healthy happy one. They've watched Food, Inc, and seen birds in overcrowded conditions where they were sickly and felt awful for them. My middle DD had the most trouble with the idea, but when I asked her last week if she wanted pork (raised and butchered by a family friend) or chicken (one of our own), she chose the chicken. I was surprised when they all ate it without any issues.

Monicas, your house looks cool!!! I'm jealous of the geo-thermal.

I've been re-reading the Little House on the Prairie series. How I'm longing for a cozy log cabin with radiant heat floors AND a cozy wood stove!!!

Skinning is fine.

There are probiotics made specifically for poultry. I bought mine from a poultry supply co, a rather big bottle of probiotic powder, for about $11 and it is bird specific.
