i remember those commercials when they first came out. Very very funny. Thanks for sharing them.

Greg thank you for the info on the wood burning fireplaces. They are a very good deal. I need to read more about them. The only space we have for the fireplace requires a zero clearance fireplace. We had a pellet stove when we first moved in, but then we replaced it with a gas fireplace that we used to heat most of the house. Well now almost 20 years later it is just to expensive to run it anymore. Plus it needs the burner replaced again. I know that we should be able to get wood for little or no cost, but DH will not be very happy with spending his 2 day a week at home getting it. I also know that most of the good wood that I can get, will mean that I would have stop everything and run out to get it by myself. I know that I should still be able to do this, but there are too many days when I can't move fast enough to do it let alone be safe doing it.

I am assuming it was 81 because of the wood heat? Wow, that is so hot. We set our thermostat around 65....I can't sleep with the house that hot. I love wood heat...grew up on it. We used to go and cut all our own firewood...we would use almost 10 cord a year...it was our main source of heat because the electricity was so high. My dad even rigged it to run a pipe to and around/through and back to the hot water tank to heat the hot water up. Miss the smell, I think that is why I love camping so much.

Okay, watched "scary car" and almost spilled my cherioos. I was not awake yet....man....sheesh. I am not watching any of the others. I don't think my heart can handle it.

Well, out to check the girls and give the their morning oatmeal. I made it a bit on the watery side and added a can of WF peaches chopped up for flavor. Everyone is looking good. We had a scare, but everyone is coming around and look fat and sassy. Other than my little Roo who has "big-man" syndrome. He just looks like a brat...he tried to attack me....I stomped my foot at him, then he gets all...."I wasn't doin' notin"....sqwak sqwak sqwak.

I guess actually he has "little-man" syndrome as he is small and wants to act big.

I'll keep that in mind. My sister is a milliner maybe she'd be interested in feathers, too.

Sort of the same here. I'm also the culler, but then again I'm also the feeder, breeder, hatcher, seller, etc. But, for the rest of the family, what happens happens. I'm just not allowed to cull or sell something they love. Which, we usually agree on things anyway. I just point more out (Such as a hen or cock that doesn't fit to the Standard of Perfection)

Heck I even name my cull roosters. They're often VERY beautiful too, but, everyone dies at some point.

Skin them, rub with salt and borax, and use quilt pins in cardboard to stretch out the hide, skin side down on thisck cardboard and lay somewhere where vermin and flies will not want, and must be able to dry.
Fly tiers will pay for the rooster pelt, providing the hackle is mature, white is the premium as they can dye it to make fishing flies.

Okay, I have a chicken eating question: I have a GIANT willow tree in my backyard that the girls get to go and play under on a regular basis. The leaves are turning yellow and are falling onto the lawn below.....my chickens love eating them. I watch them out in the yard just "hoovering" (sucking) those leaves down every day when I let them out. How does a chicken digest an entire leaf? Is there any food value? funny stuff they eat.....oh....and I found them eating a piece of styrofoam that blew out of the shed the other day....Now I know that has no food value.

I have 2 willows in my back yard. There is nothing quite as funny as watching the girls jump to get the willow leaves. I don't know if there is any food value in the leaves, but I know that they ate most of the leaves when I trimmed the willow up to put the cover over the run. They also seem to have to pick at the plastic ground cover that sticks up in places. I am still not sure why it was put down in that corner of the yard, but it doesn't come up very easily. Some of the cover was exposed when DH finally got the bamboo dug up and moved out of the run. The crazy birds also ate a lot of hard foam insulation, before I was able to get it covered up. I think that chickens are two legged garbage disposals.

I wish that the finches would eat more variety though. So far they will only eat things if they are seeds or green. I try to feed them strawberries and bananas, but they are sure I am trying to kill them. On the other hand they live for the spinach and other greens I give them.

When I had finches they were flighty little freaks. lol They did however like to eat dried banana, and other fruits. The only fresh fruit I could get them to eat was apple slices rinsed in lemon juice. You just kinda have to sick it in there, "attached to the cage, and not on the floor." Then just leave it there, and eventually you will notice little bites taken out. Thistle seed, millet, and hemp seed were also favorite treats for my caged birds. I had everything from Finches, parotlets, cockatiels, eclectus, macka's, ect... Maby my experiences will help, and maby not. Sometimes you just dont know until you try.

Your experience will help, diseases are about the same...curved beak birds will get the same diseases although indoor birds rarely aquire these disease...you could walk in your house and give a caged bird the disease..did you ever visit Seattle Parrot House on the hill below the hillclimb ?
Even years ago, they made you wash your hands, do no touching and they had rooms and rooms of birds, like a wonderful birdie zoo....how was DH birthday party ?
