Here's an interesting read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tansy . I'm trying to think if I've seen it on my place and just ain't sure. I wonder if it could be a natural wormer for chickens? Hmm.

Btw, as for goats, I've found that goats somehow know what they should eat or not eat. I've got Foxglove and ferns and I'm sure other stuff here that they shouldn't eat and for whatever reason they just seem to know to stay away from that stuff.

God Bless,

THIS is the kind we had in North Idaho that does not grow here, and the other kind that J posted looks like little daiseys, is a whole different movie, I have NO idea about that.
My Tansy had no petals on it, and we used it for alot of different things.
OK got that figured out, and how did this discussion come about ?
Does Illia think her goat ate Tansy and died ?
If so, I think it would of gone in convulsions.
I think worms or CWD...

Illia didn't say -- I just asked if she had noted any on her property ... I had to treat my goats when they were kids for rhodie poisoning and toxicity was the first thing that came to mind.... I have no idea though

I am not sure about CWD. But I don't THINK it's been documented yet in WA. I don't know for sure though.
Hope your hubby makes it back home soon!

And FINALLY somebody else thinks the same possible cause as me .......... WORMS !!!!! When we had goats with those symptoms I would worm and most (not always) in a day or 2 we got spaghetti and the goat was getting better.

Worms and lice on cattle and goats can kill or seriously drain and animal, and a young animal may have no chance from the start...I have seen goats so infested with lice they were near death...it is not a pretty sight.
But Illia was speaking of intestinal difficulties, does not explain why this goat did not eat or drink by itself...usually a wormy animals eats more and is more aggresive to get more food, this does not sound like what was happening with her goat.
Anyway, I hope she finds the problem, it sounds horrid.
DH is off to CA...

Wow, go away for a day and a half and this reads like a dramatic novel!

Illia, I am so sorry about your goat. I once raised llamas, and one morning, Yasha, my favorite suddenly was ill. He would not eat or drink. Called the vet who could find nothing wrong ... he filled Yasha with Pepto Bismol and said he would be fine in the AM. Next morning he was sicker, vet came boack out and gave him an enema and said he would be fine in the morning. Morning came, and Yasha would not even stand up. My son was 18 months old at the time, and he and Yasha adored each other. Yasha saw Alex, tried to stand to greet us, but fell over. Alex went over and sat near Yasha's head, Yasha rested it on Alex's lap and Alex knew something was wrong. Instead of running around with sticks or throwing stones as usual, he just sat and stroked his head. The next morning Yasha was dead. Never found out what happened, but his intestines were hanging out of his mouth! I was so upset I gave my other 2 llamas away. I kept all the llamas in a friends pasture, and I saw they had planted rhubarb in a corner of the pasture where they were growing veggies in (no fence around it), I also saw a little girl who was visiting her grandparent next door pull rhodie leaves off their bush and hold them over the fence for the llamas. They were always up to date on worming and immunizations. Sorry about your chicken too

I hope the dog does not have any serious health issues - it is always so sad to see an animal in pain. We found a mutt wandering down I-90 about 7 years ago, she was badly beaten, terrified of people, and her head was swollen huge on one side. I paid a grand in vet bills while I looked for her owner, eventually found him, but I refused to return the dog to him. The vet called (feeling guilty I assume because she initially chewed me out for abusing my dog), asked if I found the owner, and when I told her I had but decided to keep the dog, she reversed the charges to my credit card! Isn't that wonderful?!! She did not say anything, I just saw it on my CC statement. Well, 2 years ago the same half of the dogs head swelled up again, just as before. No Clue what caused it. We were staying on the Oregon coast then, she was fine, running on the beach and drinking seawater, woke up the next morning and half her hear was huge! Took her back to the vet for a shunt to drain it, had her head x-rayed, nothing appeared amiss.. Vet could not believe she was fine one day and like this the next, but I had plenty of photos and video of her running and on the beach even at sunset, some close-ups of her face too! At night, she kept pawing at her eye, I thought she had sand in it. I could not see any, but I flushed it anyways. In the morning half her head was HUGE, swollen so bad it covered her eye! Vet said her head was full of puss and coagulated blood, and it couldn't just be like that overnight (It was!!!). Said Willow needs an MRI, but I can't afford that. I'll deal with the $1,000 vet bill once every 5 years .... Willow is old. I doubt there will be another. I enjoy every day with her while I can - she is the sweetest dog.

Heather - Congratulations on the Baby Bump! CR - Better luck next time ... I don't think In-Vitro will work in your case.

I'm about ready to turn my two kiddos in for younger models. Maybe I'll do a better job next time around! These pre-teens are killing me! Would you like to borrow them for a reality check on what is to come when the little bugger hits pre-teens? Where'd all that attitude come from? The boy who had his first straight A report card last trimester and I thought finally he is gaining some responsibility is now close to failing 2 classess becasue he has neglected to turn in work! He has suddenly taken an interest in Axe body spray, zit wash and wants a gym membership because he noticed all the girls who hang out at the wrestling matches cheer for the guys with muscles. At least I no longer have to send him back up the stairs to brush his teeth before school starts! DD has become sassy. She acts so inconveienced when asked to day anything. 2 years ago she begged for harp lessons. Now she hates all the "boring" classics she has to learn on her harp, and wants to know when they will start teaching Metallica or Evanescence for the harp. She had a recital with the other students at an Italian eatery in Issaquah tonight - she liked the attention, so I'm hoping that she will be willing to put a little more effort into her practicing. She said she does not want to play for people. She wants to play in a vetrinary hospital for all the sick and injured animals. (she's 9).

I have 3 hens laying now!!! Yahooo! I got 3 eggs this morning, one was still hot out of the chicken when I collected them, and my Australorps was not very happy with me when I took it. I never got a small egg from any of the 3 gals, though I did get a soft-shell.

Insomnia strikes again, but this time I can;t blame DH .... I think the coffee I ordered was not de-caff. I'm going to scan some coop plans until I get sleepy. DD has agreed to get rid of her play-structure, I'll have some well drained, level ground soon!
