Well, that's hilarious. Tried to call the bull guy yesterday, no luck, was supposed to call him before 6pm last night but I wasn't cooking dinner (Not My Turn) and by the time I remembered the phone call it was 7:30 (because, weeds! And it wasn't raining!) so this morning I took my first big bite of toast and the phone rang. At least I'm about 30% better informed about bulls than I was this time yesterday.

I blame Ian; I'm teaching him to take peanuts from my fingers very carefully, an activity for which he has infinite patience, as long as there are peanuts involved (I have a shorter attention span, and a hard limit of eight peanut halves before my hands start to go numb). And then the light was really interesting and I was all intent on getting a really informative shot of the miniature auricula primroses which had just then burst into bloom.

Today is the day I cut goat wire for the new chicken run, possibly also get the PVC pipe masking done for the steel posts and the math for the roof framing done.

We'll see how that goes.

There was stuff I intended to do yesterday which didn't happen, much of it online: I'll try to get around to it this morning, but since one of the things I didn't do was take any of my morning meds, I'm going to do that first.

Me too, but only where the neighbors can't see. I have several clear tarps and one silver one that I have stapled 10' long 1X3's to two ends. I drape these over our chicken tractors when it rains. We had a party here a few months back and invited a few neighbors they looked out in the yars and asked why we had so many tarp-covered camper shells back there! I just pulled them off, rolled them up and stacked them on my outdoor "shelf" : two fat fir branches from neighboring trees about 7' off the ground! You can hardly see them.

I use the medicated feed for the first 2 weeks. I have read that the chicks are the most vulnerable during those fist couple of weeks. After that then I am feeding the grower feed from Scott's. I am a little concerned that the protein is not high enough in the grower feed. It says that it is 16%. The feed that I have gotten at Del's in the past is 24% protein.

I picked up 5 more meat birds today. I now have 15 meaties. I know that we can get that many processed in an afternoon.

I feed medicated until I can get them outside a few times to eat grass and peck around. Then I give unmedicated. I was told by the vet that exposure to the environment while feeding them medicated would help them build resistance to whatever you have in your area without killing them

And on that note, I took my Blue Wyadotte to the vet this morning and she has an infection deep in her eye. There was no drainage so I didn't think that was it. But she is on antibiotics for 10 day and we will see how she does. I feel so bad, I could have taken her to the vet 2 weeks ago! The vet also is pretty sure my EE is a boy, but he couldn't tell me he was 100% sure. I am going to grow him out until 8 weeks, and if I notice more characteristics I will have to get rid of him. He/She is also very mean to the others. I am calling him Clyde now. Lol!

So CL, could you pick me out a cute OE that is 6,7,8 weeks old pullet?

I will PM you.

I will be coming north in the next 2 weeks I would imagine since we are not going to Stevenson.
It takes us about 2 1/2 hrs to get to Monroe.
If you want to come down here & pick out chicks you are most welcome.
Or I can grab a handful of each color & bring them with me in a few weeks ?
Maybe week after next?
fair warning, I am posting flyers & going to sell as many as I can here in the next few days.
I have way too many chicks.

How old? I don't have the set up to grow out two seperate sets of chicks and integrate them with the older ones. So I am looking for ones that are 6-8 wks. (just wanting to be clear)

Hmmm... my vege garden has always been out back where nobody gets to see, so I get to do whatever I like. But the sun is in front. So this year we are moving my entire operation to the front.
I might have to plant a big row of flowers infront of my vegetables to hide & integrade them. But the cold frame might be a no no.
At the mean time, the vege starts are growing into the grow light in my laundry room.

I have 3 kinds of kale, zukes, peas, sunflowers, cosmoes, basil, holly hocks, and lots more seeds. I'm also going to harvest some iris plants and a few comfrey plants. I'll have to plant the comfrey at my neighbours before they move in.

Thanks, I only need one at this time, and would like a green or blue egg layer. But I will keep it in mind.
