Evil grammarians do indeed grab us all by the vocal cords from time to time here....sometimes the evil Hillbilly grammarians arise forth from their dusty coffins, and grab several of us by the brain stem......it is usually right around Cocktail hour...........................

I WANT SPRING!!!

It was a mixture of snow, slush, and pellets; for about 1/2 hour. Started to build up on the cars. Stopped and melted in a few minutes. Now the clouds are headed East, sunny and blue sky moving in.

There is a step by step thread on BYC on how to caponize.
I will not waste my time on that.
Cockerals uneeded go into the freezer for soup & rooster pot pie.
Meat birds will be raised for meat.
Sounds like you did a great job on the toe seperation.

Thanks CL. So when are your roos old enough for freezer camp?

Usually when they have enough meat on them to be useful...but sometimes I just do them in when they are younger..to save feed.
And in some cases, like this spleadid young cockeral I have been so excited about, a fully feathered shanks & toes Cuckoo Marans...and his comb grew out with several sprigs........
barnie.gif
so he is a bit older and will go to the freezer here soon.
Darn it, good thing I have 3 others a bit younger & so far not 1 sprig in the bunch.
With meaties you can go 6 to 8 weeks depending on breed.
Crossed with the Buckeye, the dark cornish will maybe take a few weeks longer, but will be a good free ranging meat bird instead of the nasty cornish cross types.
I have also been told by Scott at Patriot Farms to only put supplimental feed in the pasture 2 X a day so the gross chicken-imitaters will not just sit there & gorge and produce so much fat that they cannot even walk.
But don't take this as THE gospel, everyone has their own preferences.

DH thinks that 3 roos would be too much noise. PAAAALLLLLEEEAAASE....how loud can a Serama roo be? Tyson - the banty is not that loud. And depending on the big roo I get....how much different is going to be. They will each have their own pen - no fighting over ladies. I have no problems with 3 roos crowing. He can wear ear plugs.

I think that all newbies should be warned about chiccken math and the powers of enabling this thread/people havee...my theory is that chickens don't take much room and I can eat them if i need to. So I can have more.

BTW: sorry for typos, still got the shakes and it is taking me a really long/hard time to type these...can't make fingers work corectly just yet.

4312, Hope you get over your shakes soon. That's not a pleasant feeling. So not only are all of you enablers and proponents of chicken math, but once infected apparently one becomes a carrier of that condition as well. My gf who attended the show with me this weekend and is not even a part of the thread (yet) has already increased her city flock of 6 hens just by being with me. She met a gentlemen at the hotel breakfast yesterday who offered her his "loser" Cayuga ducks for a very reasonable price so she brought home 2. And after seeing all the pretty egg colors and eye candy at the show has decided she needs 4 more chickens! I swear I didn't work at all to influence her. She was just with me, watching and listening and the next thing I know she was doubling her poultry flock. It's osmosis. Crazy.

Thanks, feeling much better now.

And regarding your gf....she was doomed the second you two met up to go to the show. That is how it happens...they are assimilated (anyone remember Star Trek?)

Here it is absolutely blue sky & sunshine and about 55 degrees, with a tiny breeze.
All my garden starts are out in the cold frame, survived the night (at 38 degrees) perfectly fine, all chickies & chickens out in their paddocks...DH is hard at work building a plucker..that man is an inventing loonatic sometimes, he invents the weirdest things.
I am gonna go watch him...
pop.gif

He said he is making the feather plucker base plate...
hmm.png

Quite often he invents something wonderful.
All I have to do is say "I wish I had a %^#$% that would do &%$#% and then I wouldn't have to go and ^%$#%% everyday"
And next thing I know he has invented the very thing I needed.

We just got 1 cloud passing by....
I planted nasties this morning...and I discovered a 4" tall peach tree growing from a pit in my lettuce bed, snug in the compost.
Then I noticed there was volunteer nasties coming up, and several tomatoes!!
Love that nice warm compost!!
Later guys!
Oh my I hope FiL is OK in Spokane with the snow

I had to slice 2 toes that were fused. It was turning my stomach at first but was no big deal in the end. Won't bother me to do it in the future but hopefully won't ever have to do it again. Now I just need to learn how to capon! I think I could do it!

You're so brave.

Did the toes return to a normal position or what?

Oh wow, hope they do not grow back together!
