Well the first chick is a salmon favorelle.... and so far i am not impressed with the breed. its super flighty, the lakenvelder is even more skittish.
do salmon favorelles supposed to have 5 toes? i realize this one is defective because its beak is growing uneven so it is becoming a cross beak..... if i had a file i would try to correct it. but i am at WSU for one more week.

lol Im glad you all dont think I'mnutts for sudgesting that! But when you dont want to use poisons, or traps, it's a great alternative. My family has used this trick for quite a few yaers, and have yet to see it fail. We have to many critters to put out poisons and traps, so I use what I know works. lol I get alot of sideways cockide looks usually when I throw that out there. lol

Oh! One more thing! Make sure its in a paper bag, leave it in the bag, place it where there are signs of rodents, and walk away!

North Bend has "Little Dudes Ferrett Camp and Rescue."

The local elementary school offers after school classes. A few years ago, the Ferret Ranch offered a class: "Fun with Ferrets." No one signed up.

Some times it's the craziest sounding things that work to best! Like fresh Juicyfruit gum for killing moles. Roll up the stick and use gloves to put it as far down the burrow as possible. Then recover the hole. Put pieces in all the mounds you can find. It's safe and cheap and worked for me.

No I don't think your crazy! You use what works!

I pm'd CGG earlier this evening to find out who the possible chicky daddy might be and she said there's a possibility it was a black Orpington. I am SO hoping those hatch so we can find out what a light Sussex/black Orpington cross might look like. Those could be some BIG babies!
Now I just have to sit on my hands so I leave the eggs alone until the 2 week mark and hope I get a better look at what's going on with them. I'm very hesitant to toss any away since my novice eye may miss indication of viability. Just hope nothing explodes on me.
This is SO much fun. I think I'm going to want to do it again.

If you see absolutely NOTHING in them, as it is clear....it is not fertile and you can remove it so everything else has room.

This is day 14 for her....I like this one poster. She did have a video candling goose eggs that were not quite as old.

I find them very informative. Need to go and watch more and learn more.

And regarding exploding eggs...what I have been told: smell the egg. If it smells bad/rotten - throw it out before it explodes.

So I will watch out for the clear eggs next week along with sniffing them and if I find any will toss them. Thanks!

Hey! I'll have to try that! My mother has a massive mole colony thats constantly digging up and causing trenches in her field... They tend to stay off my property, maby thats because of the horses compacting the ground? I dunno why they dont like my place, but they sure go nutts at my moms. The only thing I had found besides chemicals to get rid of them in my previous garden was burying a cheap portable radio in a ziploc, turned on in the ground. They stayed about 40 feet away from the radio. Didnt have any issues with them in the garden. But its not cost effective to do that in a decent sized field.

On another note....I have dug out the run and I have 10 yards of washed sand being delivered tomorrow.... ya Guess I know what I will be doing this weekend. LOL.

Good for you! That's on my to-do list this summer and I'm dreading it. But I know it's going to be SO nice when it's done. We just have dirt in the run now which has been staying relatively dry under the roofed run thank goodness, but I'm looking forward to getting the sand in there. Then I plan to finish around the coop with paving stones, planters with chicken salad bar and maybe hang a planter or two from the coop run. Let us know how it turns out!​
