I so understand and feel for you. Mine are getting ready to hatch and I am not sure what to do....get some eggs (Zgoatlady?) or just put away the incubator. Mine are only just in lockdown and I am already wondering what I should do....

I want to do more eggs...but do I need to do more eggs? want vs need ... want vs need ... want vs need.
Hmmm, this sound familiar

I need no birds. I will sell and then freezer camp the remainder whatever is left at the end of the summer.

Zgoatlady...how is looking your way?

You have to cluck gently at them. That's the signal.

I needed that this morning...thank you.
Okay, I am back...I clucked at them and did my chicken dance around the incubator. How often do I have to do this?

I'll try every 1/2 hour. No videos please.

Trust me...don't hang on my every word...I am VERY inexperienced and VERY new. This is only my second hatch. I would not candle so soon again either. When is day 18? Might want to wait until then. I know others have said that too much candleing can upset and damage/kill embryos also. Wait for other responses and see what they say. If they don't stink...I would wait until all is said and done - if others say not to candle. I got a small flashlight that is used by police and FBI, etc...It is something like 250 lumens. When it is in my hand you can see the veins in my hand. Mine are on day 18 and will be in lockdown tonight when I get home. On my first candleing (first hatch) I had a small inexpensive flashlight. All I could see were dark lumps. Could not see a thing. My new flashlight, when I candled last friday, there were large lumps, but I could see air sacs, I could see faint veins on the edge of the large masses....BUT - I could see the large masses flutterig/moving. It was absolutely the coolest thing. It is such an amazing process. My flashlight was $50.

Someone, just recently showed how they added 2 rubber rings and a metal washer...in what order did this go? rubber rings against flashlight and then metal washer?

Anyway, You will be amazed, but ask everyone to see when you should candle again so you don't over stimulate/handle the eggs so that there is no damage done. Good luck. I hope some eggs hatch on the 12th - this is my DD 10th bday. She would be so happy if they hatched then.....LOL.

Happy Birthday to your DD - I did not realise she is so close in age to Olivia who will be 10 on July 4. Any chicks? I somehow lost a Barnevelder Roo today. Counted them this morning and they were all there. Counted them this evening, and 1 roo is missing. Because they are not fully grown yet, I keep them in the coop and a fully secure run - we did install some roosting bars in the run today, but thought we were very careful with the door. We never noticed him sneak by, and he did not hang out with the older hens who were out all day. I was out all day because once the fog burned off, we got some SUN!!!! I never saw the roo - he must have gone up into the woods instead of down into the garden where everyone else was.

The kids are both very upset, but at least it was a roo - one less I will need to find a home for.

Thank you for the bday wishes for DD. She will be 10 tomorrow, on the 12th. It will be day 20 for our incubator, so there verywell could be chicks.

I am so sorry you lost a roo. Maybe he will show back up.

Let us know the story. I find these interesting....how some people think and the control issues.

Okay, just saw on my morning news how an "Animal Ethics" group thinks our dogs, cats, etc should not be called "pets" as this term is durogatory...they should be called "Companian animals" and "wildlife" should be referred to as "free range animals", etc, etc, etc. They say that calling them "pets" could influence how other people "treat" them. Can I say 1 thing:

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!

Don't these people have anything better to do?

Check craigs list -- there was a guy in Wapato who had some chickens for sale a few days ago. I've not looked on craigs recently.

I'm in Yakima too! Welcome

They would, if they would sit down and think long and hard about their place in the universe, their obligations to their fellow humans, and the ways in which their version of the world would be cold, dead, and empty. Or they could grow a sense of humor, but I've given up on that happening.

There are wrongs to struggle against, in the way humans treat animals, but I'm pretty sure Temple Grandin does more good in a single day than PETA, and so on, have done in their entire history, and while keeping her clothes on, too!

We found him - he spent the night with the hens! there is an 8' chicken wire wall between the tweens and the hens, and the ceiling is about a foot above that, thought it was high enough! I did not think of looking UP! I thought barnevelders were not supposed to be good flyers.

I'm back to 5 roos I need to re-home, but the kids are happy.
