(This is why my multi-generations-Wetside Native family never ever puts a garden in before the end of May: a lot of plants never recover from the setback of sub 40F temperatures, and the grounds too cold, inviting root-rot. Don't plant corn, beans or tomatoes until you can comfortably sit bare-bottomed on the ground.)

What? Did you hear something? I didn't hear anything!

The eggs are doing great! I candled last night cause I wanted to keep an eye on that cracked one. Looks like 1 clear and 3 are developing. THE CRACKED ONE IS DEVELOPING!!! I know its a long shot but I love rootin' for the under dog.
And CR.... there is no microwave setting on the incubator!!!

I've got PIPS! Both of Whitey Ford's eggs have an external pip. These are the light sussex, possibly black orpington cross. Just like their Mama, these babies are on the track to being over-achievers. Still no signs of pipping on the Salmon Faverolles or 2 BCM's. But it is only the morning of day 20.
I guess there was a double benefit to going to the gym today - back on track and away from obsessing over those darn eggs. DD and I are headed out for big shopping today so I'm hoping that while I'm not looking there will be more action in the incubator.

And yay for another sunny day! I've got the seed starts sitting out on the deck in the shade in preparation for planting them in the summer home boxes in the next couple of weeks. I've never tried planting a veggie garden before so this is all new to me as well. New chicks, new hens, new garden - we're never too old to learn something new, even at 54! (At least I *think* I'm still 54.

Have a happy day all - enjoy the sun. Hoping for more good reports from my hatching buddies!

After a coffa-cuppee in the green house, the soil temperature is 80 degrees!!!
Air temp was 60, so not too bad at all!!

I still have to frame in & cut a hole for the vent window, and run rubber around both doors.
This green house is 14 feet by 14 feet....LOVE IT!!
I was considering running it another 5 feet....

Still might, and that would encompass yet another 12 x2 1/2 foot box.
All the long boxes are in a row, the green house is screwed to the boxes.
I left 2 boxes outside, for salad greens, which have grown fine since January under row covers.
Salad greens LOVE this cool weather.
Most varieties will not even germinate in warm weather.
So we, and the chickens, have had great fresh greens, mesclun mix & arugula since February, and then in April I planted a succesive bed of greens, flashy trout back, black seeded simpson, and red leaf varieties.
Next successfive planting is some fancy red romaines bibbs.
Note: Flasy trout back survived in my exposed bed, even during our snow last winter, in a tilled bed, some roots remained, and up it grew covered with snow, here on the coast anyways.
Seems flashy trout back LOVES COLD weather more than most.
Took our final hunk of Coho out of the freezer, nicely ice glazed a few weeks ago, and have the cedar plank soaking in water so we are grilling it plank-style covered in garlic butter & fresh dill.
The Dill bed is doing fantatsic outside, uncovered as well.
Except for an occasional slug, the hundreds of dill are up about 5".........I planted them from bulk dill seed from the health food store, (cheaper than buying in a seed packet)
Gotta have dill when you fish as much as we do!

OK, off to work again!!

I will come back with the photos.
I keep saying that, huh ?

Has anyone heard from Illia lately? I've sent her a couple of PM's and gotten no response. Has she been in other forums that anyone knows of? She may be busy with her garden...
