No, that's totally correct!

I've heard the box of rocks one...or a box of hammers. How about dumber than a sack of wet mice? Or crazier than a peach orchard billy goat?

Ok so a billy goat in a peach orchard would be a dead goat...

We got these at the Poulsbo Cennex.

Dont be disapointed if your ameraucanas dont lay blue eggs. Cenex gets there chicks from iether cackle hatchery or Ideal hatchery. I cant remember what one. but one of those. Easter eggers are great chickens though! Lay anywhere from blue green pink brown, ect. If you were wanting true blue egg layers, I can help you out. I have MORE than enough ameraucanas, 3 or 4 blue & black pullets. Or there are quite a few people here on the thread that could help you out as well.

My numbers exploded from 4 to 32 in 2 months time! lol

So those who I cant find homes for will go to freezer camp this fall.

Don't dis the EEs. Mine lays pink eggs, and looks a lot like it's Quechua ancestors.

will be interesting to see what sort of eggs my EEs wind up producing --

as baby chicks, they were easy to tell apart, each had distinctive markings

now, Ginger, Becky, Anitra, and Christina look so much alike, since their cheek muffs have covered up the "eyeliner" markings, that I will have to leg-band them to tell who's who; they have to be side by side before I can distinguish Ginger, who has a more golden cast and almost no black lacing on her neck, and a decidedly fluffier topknot (the other three have darkish beards, while Ginger's is golden-rust)

Phoebe and Dierdre both have mostly-black heads, but Dierdre has dark markings on her cheeks, while Phoebe has wild-bird light cheeks; those two I can still tell apart

all have pea combs, which is supposed to indicate blue-egg genes ... but hey, these are hatchery EEs, so I may have a rainbow of eggs once they all start laying ... Privett hatchery in case anyone wonders

Hey All!!

I'm super new to BYC and was directed to this thread. I kind of wanted to do a little "role call" since 3501 pages of posts is a lot to read...haha. Sorry if this is redundant for most of you.

I live in the Cheney/Spokane, WA area. Is there anyone here that lives in GreenBluff?! My husband, 1 year old daughther and I go there ALL the time and would love to support any of you that sell farm fresh eggs and would love to personally chat with any of you about your chickens and such! I just talked to the gal up there that owns Ellie's Edibles and just had the best time chatting with her about her chicken bunch. Plus, my little kiddo just LOVES chickens and can't get enough haha!

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Interesting about the sex link marking. I don't suppose that marking would be true for a Golden Cuckoo Marans over light Sussex chick would it? I'm not seeing large white dots on either of these babies. And now CGG has confirmed the chicks parentage, and we've found the black orp had no part in it. The whole genetics world is confusing but fascinating to me.
Thanks for the information about your olive eggers!

I agree with SadieSue....this is so amazing it makes my head hurt. How do you know this? Is there somewhere on the internet to tell us these things? How do I know if I cross X with Y and the color is Z, Z is a female....etc. http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/4.gif

I don't think it will work with the Sussex. Not sure what that genetic make up is! To be honest, I was reading the Olive Egger thread and some folks started talking about how you could get sex-links using the cuckoo/barred in the hen. I think for it to work, the roo needs to be black or a dilute of black like the lavender roo I have. But there is a whole thread on how to make sex links, if you want to read up on it here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261208

Oh
, and we went shopping this afternoon, and came home, and one of the Olive Eggers I thought was a girl, now has a clear as can be spot on her head. So now I have another male.

Her down on her head was kind of matted when I put her in the brooder this morning, and now she's all fluffed and a he!

does anyone use wing bands?
what are the pros/cons?

I like the idea of banding while day old and the band staying life long. I'm always scared of leg bands getting to tight and causing trouble before I notice.

I really need to get a number banding system going for my quails and chickens since I produce so many chicks it is hard to keep up with the records correctly!

BTW, RedReiner, I missed you cuz I love the avatar. I really love these orpingtons. The are so flufffy. Oh, btw, I just hatched out 18...2 black and 16 buff. We will be keeping the 2 blacks and 2 or 3 buffs. This will finish off my layer pen. I just love them. I wing/feather sexed them today and (if I am correct) there are 7 boys and 11 girls. 1 black boy and 1 black girl...which is great because I am keeping both. Will be interesting to watch them grow and see if I a right or not.
