I know! I get it! I was told a long time ago if your gonna eat it don't name it!! So, I've held off naming any of my chickens just in case!! lol! no seriously!!!!

Remember that any chicken that you raise and eat will have had the best life possible for a chicken and a death which is fast, painless, and free of panic and trauma. All small farmed meat tastes better for the sanity of the animals as much as anything, but also for your clear conscience that what you eat has not been deprived of life while it was living.

If it helps not to name them, do it, but what would help me is knowing that they're not Cornish Xs who've been kept in tiny boxes with nothing to do except eat and not even the room to stand up and flap their wings and stretch. I may not know them personally, but I know the ones you raise will be happier, for whatever chickens feel as happieness.

Thanks stumpfarmer!! That's how I feel! I finally put my cornish cross out today with the rest of the flock and they are so happy they can't stand themselves!! lol I have never seen a chicken run so funny in my entire life!! I was laughing so hard I had to go in the house!! Their short little legs and fat body!!! well I'm sure there's a few fat jokes out there that would suit them!!

It's just like how they produce veal!! I won't eat it!! I'm sure it's really good, but, so is grass fed beef!! Same thing really!

Wow! Do you have a clone? Or maybe just a program I can re-boot DH with.

He sometimes does the flowers and makes breakfasst, but it would never occur to him to plant or clean anything. But he's a good guy with a big heart.

ok here goes, I'm going to try and explain how I'm designing my coop, I have pictures of what the area looks like right now, and I could use some feed back.
43030_chickencoop_before_001.jpg

ok this is the front of the chicken area the building on the far right is the brooder house, it has cement floors and electical piped in, I'm going to insulate it and run what they call shower board up the wall about 2 1/2 ft high so I can just go in and disinfect it when I have new brooders. the little structure next to it is coming down, I've used it for small chicks and now it has my bad boy Muscovy drake in there! K don't laugh at my fence poles, they were hop poles we got for 10 dollars!! and the are high enough I can figure out how tall I want it and then put netting or what ever to make it a closed run.
43030_chickencoop_before_002.jpg

ok this is the chicken yard standing next to that small building looking out.
43030_chickencoop_before_003.jpg

This is the back of the run looking at the back of the coop,
ok so I want to build the coop from where the brooder house ends all the way over to the fence on the left, and build it all the way up to the front fence, so the only free ground is what is right in front of the brooder house. What I would like to do it split the coop and the run in two, one side for meaties and one side for layers. with doors going out the back for both, my question is, when you raise meaties, do they need that much room, or do you restrict movement to conserve energy to convert to lbs on the bird?? Can anyone think of a better utilization of space?? The other though was to make 4 runs to rotate the chickens through so they don't tear up all the grass at once?? I hope I made it clear, not good at explaining things, it's going to be a big coop and my BF keeps saying" are you sure you need it that big"?? and I say Of course!!!!!

anyway, I'd love to hear what you guys think would be cool, oh and BTW that's the fence we got from 4312 ! Thanks girl!!!

I put the 5 trays of green onions dehydrating into 2 trays as they are shrinking up, and clipped 2 trays of basil & one tray of sage.
Then closed it back up.
DH says it smells like a deliscious restaurant outside !!
lol.png

You recall I put the dehydrator IN the greenhouse ?
But it is so humid in there I knew the food would never dry, so DH put a metal coffee can on the intake, and snugged it up to the fabric of the greenhouse, & cut a hole.
So it is suckig in outside air, heating it and blowing warm air into the green house.
Good idea, huh ???
This way my little house (and clothes & towels & bedding) does not reek of onions, basil & sage.
Also double good idea as it is heating the green house at night.

BTW~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read an article here on BYC about a woman who modified an excaliber dehydrator, and hatched chicks with it.
Actually, it has the same heat element & fan set up as a gQf cabinet incubator, just add water

I put more eggs in lockdown, saving more eggs to ship, made the Banana Cream Pie (my hips thank you Rainy!!!!!!

) and sold 6 more 1 mo old pullets, 3 cuckoo marans and 3 olive eggers.
Proceeds go into the fish bowl toward the foundation for our house.
And still no sign of our contarctor who called last week & said he would be by last week...

Ogress, I think my DH is in love with you~~~~~~~~~~~~

Guess I will go finish the chicken and polenta dinner..
And pettec, the coop & run look great!
But who stole all your trees ??
lau.gif

Looks like Eastern WA.
Have hawk problems ?
Maybe bird net the top of your run.
I used 50 pound test monfilament stretched back & forth from posts, etc, then hang bird net over the top.
Maybe make a small chicken only door too,,in case a dog or other big predator digs in, he cannot get in the coop.
But nice big run!

OK, bye guys..........I guess I am a thread killer today.

Julie is in the Yakima area...don't think they have any trees.....
gig.gif

I know they do, I am joking....just not quite as many as I have up here.
I posted an ad on Craig's list and actually had a call this afternoon. I have someone coming up tomorrow to pick up 4 birds. I am not sure if he is going to take a cockerel or not. I can't believe so fast. I am very optimistic that I can sell these birds.

CL, you are an inspiration and an enabler. My garden is going well, and I started hatching baby birds, now I am trying to sell the extras. I do blame you ya' know.

Sheesh!
Look at all the fun you and the kids are having!
And if you sell a few, they will pay their way for feed.
And it is high time to get the garden going!!
Supposed to be in the 70s here the next 4 days!!!!!!!!!!
celebrate.gif

I gotta go cook!
Have fun!!
P.S. Anyone seen that chicken Rustler all day ?
He must still be working over at Michell's...DH was gonna go help him..have not seen him on all day~~
Later guys!!
