My duck yard is mushy and squishy too, but the gravel can't get to it. It would be like bringing a wheelbarrel through quicksand.

I spread half a bale of straw and planted grass seeds below that. Maybe it'll work and I'll have lush grass with loads of worms.

How far did you bring the last racoon?

The last one was taken about 2 miles away.
The new one not quite as far;)
Did not get any last night.
I mucked out all the dairy diah-reah muck (poop, mud & old straw) and carted it all to the compost.
Then got half the gravel in..and had to quit as the heat was killing me.
I have the other half of the gravel to do this morning..man it looks great!!!

Yes you can buy big canisters with different lengths and colors at Wal-Mart or Home Depot. I put them on a little big and then you have to just watch them--when they get a little snug, cut it off and put on the next size up. It's cheaper than bandettes and bands and when they reach adulthood, they get their permanent bands.

Thank you so very much. I am constantly learning and gleening great information.

How do you separate? color = sex or color = age (when hatched) or breed? Does this make sense? Do you just mark ones that you are wanting to keep an eye on as they may be really great "type"?

I was just at Wal*Mart yesterday (hate that place) - next trip I will have to get some zippies.

Yeah, I was too.

I mark the girls from the boys. The unmarked, I'm not keeping. I can tell with some breeds (like the bantam favs) who I am keeping and not just based on their toes--but I keep all of them longer enough to let them feather so I know what I'm dealing with. If they are missing a toenail but otherwise have great feathering, I will keep them. However, if they are missing an entire toe, or if both extra toes are fused, missing nails, etc...I will not keep them. So far, I only have one pair for sure (male is missing a nail) and the others are still too young to fully assess although I have one who's missing a nail and another who's toes are fused and missing a nail.

I watched the video 3X and tried 3X to sex the runner ducklings...and I COULD NOT "spread" or "pull downward" the vent..It was hard to even FIND the vent on most.
DH says "it is true!
A ducks a** is watertight after all!!!"

It takes lots of practice, apparently. I tried last night and couldn't really tell.

I'm going to try again tonight and then they'll probably be too old and I'll have to wait until their personalities come out to give a best guess. I am guessing just based on how they have been that I have two boys and one girl....but we'll see.

Well, I think I breezed through and almost caught up with all the posts.....and now I had procrastinated enough and better get out & move some more gravel.
I am after DH to finish the Java coop today, and get the run fence done, as the Buckeyes need their own space and the Javas are 8 mo old already (for crying out loud)
And I want the coop done before we get started on the house floor.......or it will never get done.
Bye guys!!!!!!!!!

Good luck on the Glucose tolerance test Heather!!!
Bye guys!!

They don't know what else to say. In the old days, people gave you casseroles. Now, they want to know about your feelings. It's a gesture of concern.

I'll pay a little more at Walgreen's to avoid having to go to Walmart!
You should have seen the looks on the faces of the young, cute, skinny girls at Del's when I wore my woven straw gardening hat in there!(the one I have to wear in the sun now cause I have cancer brewing on my ears from too many years of ball caps and no sun block) I forgot that I was embarrassed cause the reaction I got out of them was so funny. They were visibly mortified for me because of the hat! It was hilarious!
People need to learn to lighten up about fashion! The person inside the clothes(as long as they ARE inside their clothes) is more important than what is on the outside!

It's not the hat. It's the angle. I have gotten compliments on Mr. H's bucket hat he got for hiking because I wear it at a rakish angle. My sister is a milliner. it's my duty to encourage the wearing of hats. I have a wardrobe of them.
