Oh, dandy!

And what a concept: coops first, chickens after!

I know right!?

Quarantine all new birds for at least 30 days is recommended. Keep them away from your other birds, preferable far away from your flock. Use separate shoes to feed, separate water and food utensils, etc. to minimize contamination. Quarantine will not be a cure all but it is a tool in prevention.

Both my DD and my DS have locked me in the coop! I was filling the feeders both times and the kids came in with fresh water and latched the door as they left. When DS did so, he was still in earshot, so I shouted. When DS didso, I yanked down some chickenwire so I could reach the latch. I now keep a stick in each coop so I need only to stick it through the chickenwire to let me out.

DD locked herself in the dog run, and it was hours before anyone noticed. At some point she realized she could crawl through the dog door and get into the dog cabin/garden shed. There is a portable heater, lights and camp chairs in there. It never occured to her that the door is a Dutch Door, so all she neede to do was unlatch the to to open in, then reach over and unlatch the bottom. I felt pretty bad about it because she locked herself in the shed in November when we had the snow, and she was dressed in light clothing. She had the heater going, so she did not get cold, but she got tired of having only the dogs for company.

I have no cell reception in my backyard, but it is a good tip. Thanks!

Nice job! What a score on all those kennels!

What I'm really jealous of, though, is that ground. Where is your swampland? Why is your ground not black and mucky with festering pools of rancid algae and a rainbow sheen from the billions of dead bacteria floating in the nasty puddles? I'm beginning to think you're not really in Chehails, but live somewhere on the dry side of the state!

We have about 2 inches of top soil and then nasty, sticky, red clay. The top soil is long gone because we are on a hillside and have been terracing to get some flat space.
The swamp is in the front yard where we dug out and have a 6 foot retaining wall(well it is staggered at 2 feet and 4 feet), graded, power raked, hauled in tons of good dirt to grow grass in and put in a 90 foot french drain. But someone, won't mention who, drove the big tractor across the front yard so now it is compacted and the water can't get to the french drain. So when it rains really good, I have lake front property on a hillside!

We have been aerating yearly and spreading sand to try to get it draining again.
It has been dry enough here lately that we actually have made quite a dent in the backyard. We have a place dug out for a pool which we hope to put a deck around and a flat spot for a campfire! Roasted marshmallows, YUM!

Oh man! that is a totally cool setup! nicely done!!

Thanks!

I forgot to mention the cinder block flower bed at the end of the dog house run. Gonna grow some yummies for the birds! The rock is to help hold the built up dirt in till it rains. Cause once it does, the clay turns into glue! Just need a few rocks but the kids were over helpful. I'll have to put the rest back tomorrow. At least they were helping!

I had a cute moment today too. I sat in my camp chair for a minute to get caught up on BYC and a Leghorn bantie jumped up onto my chest and proceeded to read the posts with me! Silly thing had his tail in my face! When I was all caught up and put my phone down, he jumped down and walked off. Makes ya wonder!

We've got a marshmallow pit!

We are on glacial till on a hillside, and we still grow lakes, funny how that works!

The old North Bend "Garbage Dump Road" used to run through my property. The road was gravel, but is heavily compacted, and it does not drain well at all. We spent a fortune on french drains and stuff to try and channel the water to the french drains, all of it a waste of $.

Sounds like you will have a beautiful, fun, and useful yard. How long have you been on your property for?

We moved in when I was 1 week away from giving birth to out almost 9 yr old son.
I was going to be $6000.00 just to have the dirt moved out of the front yard so we decided to buy the tractor and slowly do it ourselves. We are way behind schedule cause I burnt myself out doing the front yard 3 yrs ago(not to mention frying my shoulders lifting all the heavy rocks for the retaining wall.) But I'm over it now and getting excited that the back yard is starting to take shape! It just takes a lot of time.

I have a cinderblock wall like that too, and I am planting it full of mint plants because I heard rats don't like mint.

I have never seen a rat here but that doesn't mean they aren't here. Lots of deer mice, shrews, voles, and even some sort of small weasel looking thing.
One of the kids opened a feed bag and didn't put it in the sealed container, and sure enough, the little boogers were up in the bag and gnawing holes in the bottom of it! YUCK!!!! I want to get a zapper now! Where can I find one?

Welcome neighbor! I'm in university place. It tok me months to convince my husband we needed chickens but he ended up building my coop. I know he's secretly intrigued by them!
Do you have any plans to go non the Tacoma coop tour next Saturday?
