My opinion ONLY --

Birds of the same age, who are pretty close to the same size can be housed together. The breeds you mentioned, BR, SLW, BO - would all be fine in a flock together. I have 8 EE's, 8 RIR's, 4 Stars, 1 BO, 1 SLW and 1 GLW-Roo - things are going along swimmingly, even tho I don't have any ducks.

I personally, would not try and put bantams and large fowl together -- UNLESS --- a bantam roo over LF hens -- maybe.

You are not a nuttie newbie -- unless we all are. Other than CR. He's old.

Stepping on rats is not. There are few to no rats on the dry side of the mtns. I've lived here for 35 yrs -- never seen a rat.

Now I've done it -- rat jinxed my own darn self.

We have B.A. PACKRATS! They are HUGE and smell like cat pee. VERY destructive.

OMG, are you serious?
At least they don't grab & eat chicks, right?
I had a bunch of pack rats when I was in Okanogan...they used to steal stuff & mess up the garage bad!!
But I do not recall that they harmed poultry or got into the house...

This little gal if she turns out, is papered, but, I personally would only breed her if her jaw straightens out, which my friend say's has actually gotten better over the week. Let me know what you want CL I might be able to work something out with her, I know she has bunches!!!

That is what ours did in Tonasket...and stoled stuff, loved red stuff and shiney tin foil stuff.
My BF scolded my kids for the distruction...turned out to be packrats, they even re-arranged his tools on his work bench and stole his Marlboro cigarettes.
Like my 3 year old would do that~~~

I heard raw tator peel can kill chooks! Any body know .

If it is a big hunk it can block the crop.
So can apple peel, and a big peel of carrot, cucumber or dog kibble.
Nothing is ground up in the crop, it has to funnel through a tube the size of a large pencil, then goes to the gizzard to be ground up.
Grapes, cherries are bad too.

I think it's the peelings of the potato that can be toxic, esp. any green parts, they are bad for us too.

I notice that many of you have several different kinds of chickens. Are they all living together? I was planning on getting barred rocks, silver laced Wyandottes, and maybe a buff Orp. I only want to start with 3-5 pullets for now and thought if I got a few different breeds, then I could see what I liked best before we try chicks in the spring. I thought if I got them from the same place, even if they were different flocks, as long as they were all going into a brand new coop, there would be minimal fighting, just enough to establish a pecking order. I love the cochins and the silkies, but need to stick to my goal of large brown eggs. But maybe I could throw in one that is just for cute? Will the bigger breeds pick on the littler ones? Can you have one cute little silkie in with the bigger laying hens? Am I a nutty newbie?hmm

I started my mix flock as chicks I have barred rocks Easter eggers ( hopefully for blue eggs) and some silkies. The silkies are the biggest of bantam breeds. So far everyone likes everyone.
