Once the sun dips behind the trees here, the skeeters will drain your blood rather quickly, if one dilly dallies around in the yard. We have lots of barn and cliff swallows, but, they can only eat so many millions of them.

I am a regular blood donor because of the creek at the bottom of our property! I try to stay covered but these bugs are desperate! They will even go for heels and other out of the way parts!

I was hand feeding clover and grass to the chickens earlier, as I watched them stuffing it down, I noticed my fav buff staring intently on a spot on my arm, through the wire i am tellin her ... get it .. kill it .. eat it ... as the skeeter was sucking blood from my arm .. finally I had to drop the clippings and get it myself .. silly chicken!

Quincy forgot his pink bandana (yes he has and wears one) that trip. And it was never SAID WHO THAT IS in the drivers seat so you are drawing conclusions based on assumptions !!!!!

Well my conclusion was based on the fact that I couldn't see you letting any one drive your dog around, let alone your DW!!!

Yeah, I realized that after I typed it.

I'd say the first priority is the personality of the chickens (and that I like how they look, LOL). I'll probably enjoy holding them more than the kids, though I hope they learn to love them too. Second would be egg production. My husband eats two days a day without fail - me, not so much, but I'd probably eat more if they were always available. I guess I just wanted to stress that I'm not looking for meat birds or those with really small eggs.

You may find Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart on line helpful. It's just a guide, nothing set in stone but it lists lots of good info on lots of different breeds. I used it to help pick some of mine.

I had the same things in mind as you do.
Docility
Heartiness
Winter laying
Broodiness
Egg production
Size of egg
Henderson's chart really helped, as did the great people here!

Some of mine turn their noses up at earth worms! What is up with that???
I love to watch them chase flying bugs! Kind of like Ballet gone wrong!

Yeah, yeah... nice try!
Know anybody else who needs a B RIR roo? I have a surplus! They sure are cute! Very vocal. Not crowing yet but cooing a chittering all the time. Sweet.

I would just love to make some blackberry jam. YUM YUM

Come to my house at the end of August and pick all you want; serious invitation, bring your daughter if you want (I have sleeping places for one other small person) and a BIG cold case. You can have every berry you can pick here, and if that's not enough I think there's some at the BIL's place.

You are not that far from me (Moses Lake area, right)....I will have to seriously think about this and may have to take you up on it. May have to remind me.

If youa re feeding thema large quantity of cherries they may not be getting the protein they need.

protein16% divided by half feeding of cherries, protein 8%

Maybe they are eating too many cherries or other food that is diluting their protein. Just an overlooked though. Lots of scratch can lower their protein too when it dilutes their feed.

we only recently started harvesting cherries... this has been going on for weeks.

I haven't given them scratch in months.

their protein can't be that low... i have seen almost every one eat a mouse a week. they hunt for mice like crazy

My guess is parasites/bacterium. Time to medicate.

No, sorry, I'm in Lacey, far from Omak.
