I just figured you counted wrong! Lol! Sorry, I just expected the number 1 next to the OE.

And I have to agree that you have the whitest white chickens!

Susie - Lucky you, with an acre and a willing husband. I have neither. LOL

My in-laws live in Germany, and my MIL loves to spend time with the kids. That's why it's so long - we only do this once a year, and we didn't go last year because DD was too little. (We were also getting ready to move). On the way back, we're also making a stop to attend my HS reunion. So I'm definitely going to need something to look forward to when I get home.

I heard it was hot in your area. Can you get a fan on them? Mist water? Like from a sprinkler or misters? when you empty a milk jug/carton, rinse it out, fill it with water and freeze it. Put it in the pens/cages with the birds/rabbits, etc. Anything you can do to cool them off.

I just went to my grocery store here in Raymond, and the tight wad produce guy has a cheap quick day-old sale rack, and on it was 4-5 flats of strawberries that had maybe 1 slightly icky on in each plastic tub, 12 tubs per flat, each tub was 99 cents.
I bought a mess, washed, sliced, tossed 2 or 3 berries and froze the rest

Ogress, QFC is usually about 30-50% high on everything compared to Top and Fred Meyers; I know pectin is under $3 at my local Freddies. Puget Consumer Co-op used to have the best prices on canning stuff, but that was before they decided to be Whole Foods for the Northwest.

Do you have a Winco within reasonable distance? They're running lowest on most basic foodstuffs (which pectin and canning supplies are, dern it!) across the board, although I avoid them because the one near me is way too darned BIG.

North Bend only has Safeway and QFC. Both the same price on canning stuff. Our safeway caters to campers at the pass, so not the best prices unless you are looking for s'more fixings. I checked ACE hardware, and they charged more. There is a Fred Meyer in Issaquah, that is the next closest grocery, they are about 20ish miles away, so I'll check them next time I head that way. Last time we went to Idaho, we filled our car with groceries. Food and everything was about half the price it is in North Bend! I think everything going to our town has a premium added, I don't know why, we are just off I-90. DD likes Tappey's Texas Style Ranch Beans. On sale at QFC in town, a can is $2.59. In Austin, regular price, a can is 49 cents!!! Our grocery bills are huge. I should plan better and shop elsewhere. Leave the local groceries to the campers.

Another productive day ...
got all the coops cleaned out, changes all the bedding. That was a lot easier since we put in poop boards, nothing stuck to the linoleum! Yeah! No Scraping chicken poop from the floor! On the other hand, I wonder how much fine chicken poop dust I aspirated into my lungs? I still can't go more than 2 months without changing the shavings. I like the smell of a clean coop. I also cleaned and stored my brooders, and soaked all the waterers and feeders in a bleach solution. DH finished fencing in my veggie garden and built a nice gate for it. Got done with everything around 9:15, then came in and took a shower. When I stepped out of the shower it was very noisy (we have a metal roof). The rain is coming down hard! It is a toad-floater out there! We got done just in time. It has been sprinkling on and off since yesterday afternoon, but not enough to really make anything wet.

I'll post some photos later, but first I want to find that pint of Lavender Ice Cream ...

I tend to avoid both QFC and Safeway unless I've got no other choices (or, with QFC, am feeling rich and want their bakery and deli stuff, which is great) because they run high on almost everything (Safeway is good on dairy products and bakery, usually) so there's another reason I'm glad I don't live in North Bend besides the rain and the traffic.

There's a PCC in Issaquah over by Home Depot and Trader Joe's, so you might try there. Does the Grange carry canning supplies any more? They and Western Farmer's used to.

(For a long time the only way my husband and I could afford the time to visit friends in King County was to do our grocery shopping on the way home, so I have a ridiculously thorough knowledge of grocery stores in places where we've never lived).

Broody - where ya been posting? I think just yesterday (or maybe a couple days ago) I was 2 posts ahead of you, now ya got me beat by more than 100! I think you will reach 2,000 first. What is after "Chicken Obsessed"?

Traffic here is usually not bad at all, unless you come through at the start of a holiday weekend and the place is filled with RV's! I never thought to check the grange for canning supplies. I'll call them in the morning.

Or I may go to the other side of the Mtns and pick up some apricots while I'm there. I found great prices at "Yokes", but the closest Yokes is in Kennewick or Spokane.

Where is Winco? Are they related to Wall Mart? If so, DH won't be happy if I go there.

Winco is, according to my daughter, who knows ALL about them (ask hallerlake what it's like when my daughter knows ALL about something

), a west coast chain, not related to Windixie. *I* won't shop Wallyworld, so your husband and I are in accord on that one. Winco's the new big thing around here, and have a grand bulk section and really good prices on lamb, according to my sources.

One other source you might look into for pectin and flats and rings is Vermont Country Store online. I wouldn't buy jars from them, the shipping would eat you alive, but they used to have good prices on canning supplies.
